Just got hit up about hormones...

Recommended Posts

Alright guys, I've just completed all my steps towards having RNY surgery and waiting for surgeon to give me a surgery date. Now tonight my wife tells me a man who has had RNY, told her that men's hormones go crazy after having surgery and we could go mean and such stuff.

Any of you have problems with hormones?

Fill me in on some info if you will? I don't want to go turning into some kind of monster or have to be shot like Old Yellow dog was... ;-)

Thanks!

Yes, there is a seed of truth in this. Hormones go crazy after WLS as you lose the extra weight.

Some turn depressed, others bitchy, angry, withdrawn, or you have that crowd of people where they get hit by an energy burst and they could take over the world ( insert joke).

Also, sex life suffers. Some feel their sex appetite increases while others lose their interest.

I call it the luck of the straw.

Hormones do go crazy in both men and women after WLS,

first the initial shock of the surgery, then your relationship with foods changes dramatically, you won't look at food the same, you cant eat the same, you will feel deprived, you will feel alone you will cry (food addiction is hell to kick, its like a drug)

some get depressed, some have regrets (I had this in the beginning, not any longer) some people are cranky, some have the blues...some get annoyed with the people around them, because they can not understand or relate to your new journey your on. People in general will just annoy you...(just because). some sex lives are better now that the weight comes off....and your sexual appetite gets stronger and better :) (whewww i know for me it has lol) all of this does change its just for a short period so let ppl know to bare with you.

you will smile, you will cry, you will get upset but you will notice progress and once all the hormones get in order, you will enjoy your new life journey....

lol its like having PMS times 10000000 lol joking.., maybe...:)

good luck! we are here for u!

I think this is your chance to understand a little of what we women go through every month with our monthly cycle!!

As your fat cells are released hormones are released as well. The first few months are a roller coaster ride. You just have to strap in and hang on.

Wow, sounds kinda spooky. I throught I had done all my homework and learn all I needed to know. All the support group meetings I've gone to, I've heard nothing about this, the surgeon has never mentioned it, plus my wife is out 13 1/2 months RNY surgery and she went through nothing to do with hormones unless she was hiding it mighty well, because I watched her close to see how she done with RNY surgery.

I could only hope I go though it as smooth as she has I guess. ;-)

So I'm guessing what... I just ride through it and wait it out if it happens with me???

Thanks everyone for your replies!

Unless it came in regards to my wife, hormones were the farthest thing from my mind. I'm only what, four days out and I spent all day crying like my 4 or 6 yr old daughters. I'm 38 and don't cry ever in front of my girls. My girls came home today from in-laws and my daughter gets me crying b/c she drew a book for me.

After telling my wife today that this was the biggest mistake of my life, and crying on HER shoulder for once, she mentioned that the things I'm saying were the things she said during post-pardum (sp?) she had after our first.

Prolly TMI for guys but I know I'm not the only guy that has the WTF moment during the first week.

Believe me when I tell you this, it is normal to feel this way. I remember saying after surgery how many regrets I had, what a mistake this was, what did I do to myself and now I know this was the best decision I made for my life. You are right on time with the hormones because it was a few days after I started to break down...making dinner for my family made me breakdown. Once your mind catches up with your body things will run smoothly. It's all part of the adjusting, I wish you the best of luck :) we have all been there

I'm five years out and I don't remember anything like that with me. I had the energy boost. I just started exercising and never stopped.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
