First Appointment!

Recommended Posts

My first appointment (consultation) was supposed to be on August 28th, however the hospital called this morning and I go on Friday! Now I'm really nervous for some reason.

Anything I should be sure to asked about during this first visit?

Thanks!

I imagine that every surgeon/clinic does things their way. My first surgeon appointment was pretty brief (about 15 minutes). During that appointment I explained what motivated me to seek WLS. I also told him that I was most comfortable with the Lapland. The remainder of the appointment was an explanation of why that would probably not work for me and that I should consider VS or RNY. When we talked about my GERD, he said that I should have an upper endoscopy to further help my decision making. (Ultimately, we determined that RNY would be best in my situation.) It was an overwhelming 15 minutes, but very helpful. I had a list of specific questions for my second appointment with him be because I was more focused, now that I knew which procedure would be best for me. Those questions were about current meds (NSAIDS, in particular), kidney stones (I have a history with those devils), does he use drains, and timing of the surgery (how long in the hospital, how long off of work).

So, after this long-winded story, heres the short version: You should be ready to listen and to ask about any general concerns you have.

Good luck!

Molly

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
