second guessing my approved sugery

Hello Everyone!!! Im 2 weeks away from surgery and all I've been hearing and reading is how gastric bypass is bad. I've heard that it makes u bald, you have long term complications, and that the surgery takes years off your life just the same as being overweight. My mind a mess. I've been so stressed since I've got my surgery date. Really thinking about not going through with the surgery. I don't know what to do. :-(

Talk to your surgeon and maybe only listen to actual medical studies. Most people get pre surgery jitters, but that's not what yours sound like. You can always reschedule.

We all go through that!

But every person is different!!

You should talk to your surgeon and Nutritionist and write down everything that concerns you!!

Date of Surgery 12/18/12

I felt the same way a week ago. I had surgery Tuesday and am doing really well. No pain or sickness so far. You have to do what you feel is right for you. No one can make that decision but you. Just remember everyone is different. I will pray for you and hope all goes well for you ????

What helped me get past all the bad stories is I read about a study done. They took 100 people and recorded their medical records over 10 years. Half had bypass and half did diet and exercise. No one from the bypass group died, but a few had complications. All the people in the diet and exercise regained the weight they lost and about 15 to 20 of them died within seven years due to their other medical conditions that would have been treated with the bypass. I don't remember where I read about the study because I did so much research. You will see some people that wish they did it sooner and others that are glad they waited till they were ready. Only you will know what is right for you, but there are not that many horror stories compared to success stories. The chance of complications is like one percent. That was a chance I was willing to take.

I was concerned about the baldness concerns too. I spoke to my surgeon who assured me that as long as I took in enough Protein and took my supplements that I would be fine. A lot of the horror stories that you hear are when patients don't as instructed by nutritionists and their surgeon. My surgery was 3 weeks ago, I wouldn't have done anything different!

The hairloss would begin three months in and should only last three months, because hair goes in cycles. I lost hair with the lap band and it was a lot of it, but it began growing back within the promissed three months. I just had rny and am not sure if I will lose hair again but I'm not worried knowing it will grow back.

Do not second guess for 1split second!! It's the best decision I have ever made. I am 6weeks out, still have all my hair. As long as you take your supplements you should be fine. I would rather live a few years less ( if what you have said is true ) as a thinner, happier, healthier person, than live a few years less and live a fatter, unhappier, and unhealthy life. Maybe I'm wrong but if being thinner is a complication I'll have it. Not sure what other complications are.

For me personally the risk were worth it because at 360 pounds I was NOT living. I got a wonderful bald spot in the front of my hair line 3 months out but with a full time job doing what I wanted it didn't matter. I jogged the other day! JOGGED! Me 0_o when my niece and nephew hug me there arms wrap completely around me... I rode a roller coaster for the first time in 10 years.... Last time I rode a amusement park ride was an attempt... I didn't fit and had to walk off the ride by myself. I'd lie and tell people I didn't like amusement park rides. I would have panic attacks at the thought of being in large crowds. I'd go to eat with family or friends and the restaurant was packed I'd start panicking and ask to go some where else. I suddenly didn't like it there. Just getting out of bed an in the car was a struggle. Now I can work 10 hours on my feet all day then throw on a pair of cute pumps and go out on the town :-D I had some complications right after surgery but they were quickly taken care of. The first few months can be rough and I still have head things to work with but over all this journey has been pretty damn good and I'd do it again in a heartbeat :-) good luck in whatever you decide :-D

I think everyone questions this decision at some point. The best thing you can do for yourself is to be informed! I read numerous books, researched websites, etc. I wanted to know what I was about to do to my body. I am day 4 post op and not regretting it at all! Best of luck to you, you can do this!

There is a concept in retail that a happy customer is not going to tell many people about their positive experience, but and unhappy person will scream from the roof tops what went wrong. I think the same thing applies here. People that have complications want everyone to know of the horrors that lie ahead and the millions of us who are happy tend to keep it to ourselves.

The decision must be yours and I would suggest doing some soul searching. If you are not 100% committed your risk of complications go up.

I did not loose my hair and I really struggled with my Protein intake the first 6 months. I did have 3-4 months where I did not eat much because it made me sick every time, but sitting here 110 lbs lighter I would do it again.

Good luck!

I really like the retail analogy :)

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
