Barfing - my best and worst favorite

Recommended Posts

OK - 8 weeks post surgery and I have barfed 4 times - three from over-eating and once from spices. Is my reverse-peristalsis average high or low compared to yours? DO you see any bile when you up-chuck? I don't. Tastes just as good coming up as it did going down [sorry if that makes you queasy].

I titled this "best and worse" - because when I over-eat, I feel dreadful. Horrible. Pitiful. Nasty. Worse still. And then when I blow chow, I feel awesome. Wonderful. Crazy good.

So tell me straight - How strange am I?

I'm an RN so u will have to do wayyyy better than that to gross me out!

Your not crazy, everything changes with this surgery. I'm actually shocked at the things my body craves now & pre op I never would have believed you I would actually want to eat green veggies daily ( & I'm still on puréed) who knew?!? Physiologic changes are immense, & change is stressful be it good or bad so be kind to yourself : )

I have only thrown up once (I am four weeks post-op) and it was horribly painful for me. I had a lapband for 3 years and I used to throw up a lot. My band was just a little bit fickle and I just got used to it. Throwing up now is completely different.

I threw up because I over ate. I wish I could say it was something incredibly delectable, but it was on sliced deli meat. I didn't measure out my portion and was eating from the bag. I realized it as soon as I had done it, but it took a few hours for all of the pain to subside and to stop the little bits from coming back up. Thankfully there was no bile. I sobbed for at least an hour of that time because it was so awful.

When I would throw up during my banded years, it felt great. There was always slime and pain involved and the minute I was able to get whatever it was back up, I would feel completely revived. This was different and I hope it never happens to me again.

Theres no stomach acid so no bile. Ham was my worst. I would measure your food. Overeating will lead to stretching the pouch, and if puking is your answer that can be dangerous as you dont want to fall accidently into an eating disorder

Very normal... I barely vomit now almost 9 months post up. When I do I feel so good & in control cuz for some reason it didn't agree it just comes out. I don't over eat & I know how much I can eat so I keep it at a certain portion size. I feel awesome when I vomit not as its happening but when it's over. I'm not crazy. I just feel so in control & if it comes out its cuz something didn't agree as I mention is barely happens.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
