Possible anemia - could surgery be postponed?

Recommended Posts

I just got my lab results back, and for the most part everything is within the normal range. My white cells are slightly elevated (they have been most of my life), as well as a couple of other results. I did my research (at 2:00 a.m. - yes, I am a dork!), and found that possible Iron deficiency anemia could be the cause of those results. Mind you, they're not outrageously elevated (within 2 points over the high end of normal). Other than that, everything else looks fine (glucose, kidneys, blood clotting, etc.)

Do you think this is something major that may stall the process? I sure hope not. I just have one more test to do (the ever-so-fun stool sample to test for H. Pylori bacteria (cause of ulcers). I hope to get that done in the next few days.

You will do fine. I don't see major reasons not to get the surgery done.

It better not! Lol. My surgery is Jan. 15. My wbc are elevated and I have iron deficiency anemia because of minor blood loss in stool. It took many many months to figure out why my blood results were screwed up, but it turns out I have very small ulcers in my small bowel. I still got the OK to go ahead with surgery though. I would try to figure out with your doc why you're iron deficient. Is it blood loss? is it malabsorption because of celiac etc? there should be a reason

Thank you ladies! I will admit that my diet has never been very iron-rich for my whole life. I've had high WBC counts since I was 18 years old. Iron supplements have helped in the past, but have always made me constipated, so I stopped taking them. I know they will be a regular part of my life post-surgery, though. Crossing my fingers!

You should be OK... just take Iron supplement and your levels should incrase. When your surgeon gets your results he is the only one that will make that decision if it is OK for surgery or not. they just want everything to be OK before surgery...

I hope not I have it too. My PCP sent me to a blood specialist and I learned they can give you Iron through a IV. So I would not worry about it.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
