Just Had My 1st Appointment

Recommended Posts

Hi all. Just had my first meeting with the surgeon on Wednesday and now I'm so confused. I originally went in thinking I wanted a band and not a bypass. However, now I'm leaning towards the bypass....and all the research I've done has been for the band!

They explained the average success rates with both surgeries, and my head started spinning I think. If I'm going to have major surgery, I want to give myself the best chance at success.

My insurance will pay for either, and they said I don't have to make a final decision until I schedule my surgery.

I'm going to be 29 in February. They said I have 132 pounds to lose, but the goal in my head was 100. I have no diabetes, hypertension or high cholesterol but I do have sleep apnea and some quality of life issues.

Anyone else go thru thinking they wanted one then thinking they wanted another?

The same thing happened to me too.

I went in thinking I wanted the band but all the information he had given me, changed my mind right then and there.

He also told me he was taking more bands out than putting in.

The band is not for me, and I'm glad you found out it wasn't for you either!

My sister originally went in with the idea of getting banded but then received the information on all 3 WLS and wanted the best bang for her buck. I went in knowing I wanted the RNY because the percentage of weight loss is the highest with the RNY. I figured if I was going to do this I'm going for the RNY. I see so many people on this site that have been banded and went for the revision to RNY. You need go with what is best for YOU.

If I'm going to have surgery, I want the best outcome possible......not a maybe outcome. They said the lapband is "you on your best diet." Well, had that worked I wouldn't need the surgery in the first place.

Yes I had the same sentiments. I want what they refer to as the hold standard, plus the thought of slippage and erosion really freak me out. I will say I'm having a harder time deciding on the RNY over the sleeve. The though of following the supplement regime is a bit daunting.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
