I am scheduled for February 25th for lap-band removal (it slipped right away) and RNY. I have Medicare as primary with a BC/BS back-up. My BMI is 38 and I have CAD, sleep apnea, HTN, fibomyalgia and a laundry list of other issues. However, with Medicare, the magic number is 35. They weight you at the time of surgery and if your BMI has fallen below 35, they will cancel and not proceed. I cannot lose any weight prior to surgery.

My doc had a cancellation and my surgery is now 1/4/13 instead of 2/25! I am happy he does not do the liquid does not to the liquid doet first as I cannot lose any weight before surgery.

Good luck to you all!

What I was told was when you are ready to go into surgery, you are weighed and if you do not meet your insuance criteria, you go home.

As Medicare is my primary, the magic BMI is 35. If I get to my surgical date and my weight has fallen below 35, they will not proceed. My BMI is 38.5 so I cannot lose any weight prior to surgery. With the upcoming holidays, I shall down eggnog!! And mashed potatoes with lots of gravy!!

Even though my doctor does not use a pre-op liquid diet, there is one day and two days of Dulcolax to make sure you are cleaned out as they are dealing with "innards" here, that alone takes Water weight with it, so I have to be careful. I would hate to drive 3 hours to find out I am rejected at the last moment over a pound or two.

Every doctor is different in prep but insurance companoeis have differing qualifications and I have many qualifying conditions but with Medicare, no matter what, a BMI has to be 35 or above.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
