Stopped losing weight (and even gained) only 2 weeks after surgery - normal?

Recommended Posts

Hey there,

I have a question regarding weight loss after surgery.

It seems like only 2 weeks post-op I stopped losing weight and even gained some.

For almost a week now I've been yo-yoing over the same 2-3 pounds up and down and the weight doesn't really come off.

Seems to have started after I started eating soft foods.

Its so weird, I thought weightloss shouldn't stall so fast after surgery?

Also, in total I lost 13 pounds in about 2 and a half weeks, seeing the doctor for a checkup he said I'm not losing enough.

How can I not be losing enough and stalling only 2 weeks after surgery?

Its not like I'm shoving icecream down my face all day long. Sure, I have sinned once or twice but thats about it.

I try to eat mostly soft solids to fill up master and avoid sugary stuff

Was 233 pounds the day or surgery and I'm now 220 pounds.

Is this supposed to happen? I do walk atleast 20 minutes every day too!

2 weeks out and already on soft foods? Wow. It's amazing how each doctor is different. I was on a clear diet for 7 days. All liquid diet for weeks 2 and 3. Sorry I'm not help still on all liquids.< /p>

Yeh it really is a bit strange isn't it? I thought it was too fast aswell but they claimed it was no problem.

Week 0-1 - liquids

Week 1-2 - Full liquids / Mushy stuff

Week 2-3 - Soft food

Week 3+ - Normal food

It does seem a bit too fast but so far my stomach seems to handle it fine

I think you hit the dreaded 3wk stall. I have done the same thing. Sucks I know, no matter how much I have read about it, I still feel really disappointed. I have to rely on everyone's experience that if we keep working the plan the weight loss will resume.

My doctor refused to weigh me at my 2 week visit. He said it was not important! Yes I couldn't believe it either. What was very important was getting enough Water, Protein and exercise. I stalled at week 2 for about 3 weeks. I was so frustrated. Every time I would lose a few pounds the scale would jump up a few pounds and I'd spend the next week trying to get the scale down again. Very frustrating but everyone has their own pattern of losing. My body is constantly stopping to "re-calculate". Bottom line is, at almost 5 months post op I'm down 53 pounds. Focus on how your clothes fit more than the number on the scale. Before you know it you'll be into a nice pattern of losing. Good luck!

This is normal and very frustrating. This does go away, continue with your plan.

Look up previous post on stalls, especially the dreaded 3rd week stall.

What are your guidelines for calories and Protein?

Are you meeting them?

You mentioned you "sinned once or twice".

I know it's hard to eat too much at 2 weeks out. Just curious to what you sinned with.

By the way I don't think 13 lbs in 2 weeks is a bad thing at all!

Shame on your Dr for telling you that.

This is a journey and he for one should know that all people have different journeys.

Good luck with yours!

Oh I'm relieved to hear its a known 3rd week stall thing :)

As for my sins, I went out for a lil cup of icecream about once every 4 days for 3 times during my full liquid phase since I got tired of drinking Water and yogurt.

As for calorie guidline..well I don't really have any. Basicly its 'eat small meals every 2-3 hours until you're full, start with Protein first, drink Water inbetween' I don't really monitor calories or anything, nor Protein intake. I do drink 1 cup of Protein shake a day aswell.

Yeh I found it a bit weird my hospital's guidelines are so general and vague with no real tracking. Strange indeed.

watch what kind of Soups you are having and only 3oz @ a time & you should only be having sugar free ice cream.

Even if your doc does not impose a calorie restriction or guide, you might want to see what others are and follow that. My guidelines are attempt to get in 60 gr of Protein and 600 cals a day by week 3. After that, maintain until around 9 months to a year and by a year I should be at 900 cals a day and 90 gr of protein. Having no rules seems scary, as this surgery is only a tool. On a side note, my cousin also had no rules, and after 14 months has still only lost 40 pounds.

I lost 12 pounds my first two weeks and not a pound since; I'm nearing the end of week 3. I've been a perfect angel. No lie!! I'm getting in 65-80 grams of Protein per day but still haven't reached more than about 475 calories. I haven't done much exercise because I have a nasty sinus infection and am doing breathing treatments every few hours. Day of surgery (9/16), I weighed 239. Today I'm at 227. I heard about the dreaded week 3 stall. Just have to keep the faith that the weight WILL come off. (It will come off, won't it?!)

your body lost a lot of Water weight the first two weeks. You'll start losing excess fat from now on, just make sure you maintain a high Protein diet. consider going back to liquids with maybe some sugar free Jello for a few days. my dr said to not start soft foods until week 4 to allow for my stomach to heal.

Good chance it was liquids yeh. However, I lost about 13 pounds on the pre-op diet aswell.

And yes I always found it very odd that theres such a big difference between post-op diet instructions with different surgeons. I thought there was a much more unified opinion regarding what and how much to eat after this type of surgery.

      April Surgery
Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?
      Thanks

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.
