helpppp - open surgical wound 9 days post op

Recommended Posts

I just took a shower and while washing my incisions, the glue chunk from the incision in the upper middle part of my abdomen came off. I didn't think this was a big deal until I got out of the shower and realized the incision was open! My hanging belly is pulling it open. When I sit/lay, it's closed. I covered it with a gauze pad, but IDK if I should go to the ER or something to have it glued? Do they sell glue like that at the pharmacy? I'm so worried, what do I do???

Do you have any butterfly bandages you could use to close it up?

I don't, and I don't think that would be strong enough. Since it's at the top of my abdomen, I feel like it gets the most force of gravity pulling down. I wasn't scrubbing or anything, but the glue came off and I think it may have taken a scab with it. I'm just terrified it's going to get infected or something. :(

I put a call into my doctor, they said I should get a call back in 20m.

In the mean time, I'm bawling. I swear, I used to have a thicker skin, lately I cry when I have any overwhelming emotions.

I would go to the ER and have it cleaned and the closed with either Dermabond or Steri-strips or a combination of both. I would be more concerned about infection if you close it yourself. Just say better safe than sorry.

I think that as long as you keep it clean and covered til it can form a new scab that it would be ok infection wise. I had something similar happen with an incision from having my gallbladder removed, except it's cuz i kept picking at it . But it opened, and the weight of my tummy ( this was pre sleeve) kept pulling it open, once it finally did re-scab, and i left it alone, it healed, but i have a big scar there now. Hopefully the doc gets back to you soon!!

Doc got back to me - he said to cover it with a dry gauze and keep it covered. He said check it for any pus drainage and it should scab over, but might leave a slightly bigger scar.

I'm really not worried about scars. But infection scares me!

So I'll keep my eye on it. If it's not healed up by Monday morning, I'll call me PCP and see if he can get me in to glue it up.

You will be ok. My incisions didn't get glue because I'm allergic to adhesive. No staples or sutures either. They wrapped my abdomen with an elastic binder.< /p>

Superglue. For real. I'm not a doctor but my BFF's husband is. That's how he Patches up his three ankle biters when they require stitches of any kind. Our NUT stand the same thing.

Would I be freaking out, too? For sure! Would I superglue myself, probably not, but that's what it is.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
