Swelling Above My Port Incision

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm exactly 3 weeks post Op, and I have swelling above my port incision that is not going away, and I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this? It doesn't hurt, but it's just annoying/concerning. Doctor said that it is probable a bouldup of Fluid that will go away by itself over time..?

Are you sure it's "swelling" or maybe it's just the port site bumping out where you can see it. The reason I ask is that the day I was leaving the hospital and getting dressed I felt a nice sized bump coming out over my rib cage, just under my breast. I made the dr feel it right away and he said that it is the port. He said I can feel it and see the bump because I have a very thin abdominal wall which means the port is closer to the outside. He said it will always stick out. It's really weird and it takes some getting used to. Sometimes it gets irritated from my bra. If you think it really is swelling though you should make an appt with your dr. Good look, I'm sure everything is fine.

Hi,

Funny that you posted this since I came to the site tonight looking for answers. I am 3 weeks post-op in a couple of days. A few days ago I started to have discomfort below my port incision.

I had discomfort after surgery......but at about 1 week post op it went away and I felt nothing. It seemed strange to me that I felt this discomfort again. All I would call it is discomfort.......it is not pain and it is not all the time -- just when I move or sit in a position that causes me to move that area of my body.

I can't tell for sure -- but it seems that I have new bruising right below my port incision as well. However, it is very slight and perhaps I just did not notice it before.

Has anyone had this before? I do have a young son that I've picked up a few times in the last week or so....but he is only about 24 pounds and it has been to get him out of his car seat and put him on the ground type of thing in very rare instances.....and I haven't done anything that has particularly irritated the area since surgery.

I'm thinking about giving it another week to see if it feels better.....and if not, trying to see the doctor again.

I'm 4 weeks post op and if I remember correctly I did have slight bruising around the port area. I would get that uncomfortable feeling too and have to move my position. My doctor said it was the muscle just getting used to the port being attached to it. He said it would pass and for the most part it has. Sometimes it would feel almost like a twitch. If your bruising doesn't get any better definitely make an appt to put your mind at ease. It's sure good to know there's others who share the same problems and worries.

I agree with Shutuplena my dr said the same thing when i was worried about slight bruising in my port region...he assured me nothing to worry about just my body getting used to the object inside.

:)

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
