6 months out and getting worried about weight gain!

Recommended Posts

I am six months out and have noticed I can eat more and am hungry more. I am happy with my weight loss and don't really care if I lose more.

Maybe I am just paranoid but I know people can gain weight after this sugery and I know this is just a tool. Losing this weight has been so easy and quick for me that I am scared and kind of waiting for the other "foot to drop" so to speak. Do I need to go on a diet now? I weigh everyday and have not gained any yet but I am so scared. I love my new life and I don't want that monkey on my back again.

Diet is an ugly word but yes, you do need to watch what you put in. After a while I learned how to "trick" my tummy and get more in than needed by doing all the things I shouldn't. Yes, I am above my lowest weight and would like to lose 5 to 10 pounds but I am comfortable where I am still below surgeons goal for me.

So, what was suggested to me was having a single day of liquids protien shakes once a week. This allows me to have fun food every once in a while and now worry about weight gain. Luckily my sleeve prevents overeating. Snacking is a killer of any sleeve post op plan.

You know what you need to do. Easy? No, my surgeon did not do brain surgery only stomach surgery. So just continue to do the right thing. Follow the 3 meals a day plan, 60 gm min of Protein, suppliments, 64oz of Water, stay away from sugar, limit my carbs and excercise.

Good luck! I love my sleeve and have no regrets.

I've been at goal for nearly a year. I could easily gain weight back now.

What helps me:

Eating enough good food (Protein, whole grain, veggies, and fruit, dairy) early in the day. If I don't, I have a roaring craving for Snacks later.

Limiting alcohol to once a week most weeks and limiting to two drinks, which is enough to give me a buzz.

Eating Protein first at all meals.

Limiting after dinner snack to a lower calorie option that is filling on most days.

Keeping trigger foods out of the house.

Stocking up on healthy foods I like.

Walking at least 3 days per week for at least an hour.

I do enjoy splurges, but they are a splurge, not the norm.

Yes, you just need to stay on top of what you're doing. Do not slip into denial, avoid the scale and stop watching what you eat.

I, personally, do not diet and I abhor the very idea of dieting for life. But I still make those good, basic post sleeve nutritional choices the majority of the time. I flex the rest of the time. In this, I feel satisfied and do not experience regain. I also weigh daily because the first place I'm going to see a change in my diet reflected is the scale.< /p>

It's important that you don't approach everything you've done to this point as a diet - as something that ends now that you've achieved goal and feel more comfortable with your body. Because it's that very approach that can lead to backsliding and regain.

Just stay on top of what you're doing and don't take goal weight as a free pass to eat whatever you want whenever you want it, and you should do fine.

Congrats on having such success is such a short time.

One more thing: Like Cheri, I weigh every day. While it's not for everyone, I strongly recommend weighing at least weekly to keep on top of things.

This is a life time life style. I know that it is possible to gain my weight and my weight does fluctuate with Water retention. I got to my low of 143lbs and then had to increase my salt intake to retain water due to having really low blood pressure. So I have put on about 3 lbs in water retention. I do weigh myself daily and I can eat more than i could early on. I do eat mostly Proteins and keep the carbs really low.....I'm working on adding more veggies to my diet also. To be honest, at this point, I really don't want to eat unhealthy anymore, I want organic foods and try to order wild salmon when ever possible.......if no organic, or I can't get myself to pay a higher price for organics, then I pick the fruits with a thick skin. Sorry for being off topic, but the carbs I eat come from fruits and veggies that are natural, after all, we are primal.... :P

I am a big fan of weighing regularly - the reason I do it because if I start to see weight drop it motivates me to continue the good habits and if I see the weight climb it motivates me get back on track. I agree it is not for everyone but for me it works well.

I also get scared about gaining weight back. I still woud like to lose 13 lbs but figure it is going to take a me several months to accomplish- and I am below my surgeons expected weight loss.

Weight gain is always a worry. It's so easy for me to gain weight now.

In the beginning, I was always so full, just looking at food made me feel sick. Now, I am not as full, and everything looks good. I have to be really careful.

It's so easy to snack now too, because i am not so stuffed all the time anymore.

It's a life long battle I am afraid, but it should be an easier battle with the sleeve.

I can definitely eat more. Yesterday, there weren't a lot of choices where I was. I ate a whole McDonalds cheeseburger bread and all. I know I could have chosen a salad but it really sounded good and I haven't had one since about 2 years out. At that time, I could only barely finish it with a couple bites of bread. This time, I ate the whole thing, bread and all.

This thread is awesome. I have been sleeved almost two years now (in June) and I am eating like a monster lately. It's so scary. I went down to 58 kg but now am up to 60 so I gained like four pounds after a year of the scale never moving. I notice I can eat a whole bunch more and so I have begun doing regular 5 day pouch test and will begin doing one day of liquids like iegal above had spoken about. I'm terrified of gaining my weight back. At first I could not stop losing weight and at the suggestion of my surgeon to enjoy it and eat chocolate to stop the weight loss. Now I have completely cut the chocolate out! OUT OUT OUT! I'm back on Protein only diet and veg and monitoring like a hawk!!! Scared to death!!!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
