how long after surgery did you feel "normal"?

Recommended Posts

How long after surgery did you feel "normal"? I told the PA at my surgeon's office during my 2-week post-op appt that I felt pretty much back to normal--and she started laughing (LOL). She said I just had a major surgery and the soonest I would really be back to normal is 6 weeks. I do notice that I get fatigued more quickly but I do feel that I'm about 80 to 85 percent normal if I reconsider?

I would consider normal feeling up to an active vacation where you can walk around all day and not run out of steam--etc.

I'm with you, with the exception of a little tenderness getting up out of bed that lasted through the first 1 1/2 - 2 weeks, I felt normal after about 5 days. I consider myself very lucky that fatigue was never an issue.

I do have to take into consideration that I could not lift anything over 10lbs. for the 6 weeks after, so I wasn't really doing all I usually do. I felt fine, but stuck to what my doc told me.

I felt pretty normal afterward. I went through some depression issues and frustration, but I didn't have any real issues. Never needed pain or nausea medicine. I thought the surgery process was pretty easy.

That's true, JerseyGirl! I told my cat he needs to lose a few pounds so I can lift him! (he's about 13 lbs and just a little chunky). Lifting the 40-lb dog isn't an option right now, which is sad when my husband is already in bed and she wants to come up too (the animals rule the roost in our house it seems!).

I also feel a lot better since I started thin purees. I felt pretty punky on just full liquids (my doctor doesn't allow yogurt, refried Beans, or anything like that while on liquids).

Was really 4-6 weeks that I felt I had a lot of energy and was 'myself'. It gets better and better. I didn't have any post op pain and have had no food intolerances or anything so it was really just an issue of having energy and stamina. That really does take a while to come back.

I felt normal for the first 4 weeks, not tired, no sleeping problems.

Almost 10 weeks post op, I'm exhausted all the time despite upping my carbs, and I'm having issues with insomnia.

I felt pretty normal after about 3 weeks. I say "normal" only because I was still adapting to the new diet and schedule back at work.

I was allowed those but I stuck mostly to the liquids but did have a sugar free pudding to eat with my crushed up my tylenol. I must sound like a broken record on here, but the unjury chicken Soup got me through and gave me a great Protein source.

I have two cats, one of which did not like that she could not sleep on me or have me pick her up. She is just over 10lbs too.

Glad you are recovering well!

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
