Drains...how long before your's healed completly?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm 9 days post op today. My drain was removed 6 days ago and is still gooing. Not a massive amount by any means. It was itching like crazy the last two days and still itchy today so I know it is healing but just curious how long it took for yours to completely heal or heal to the point that you didn't need bandages over it? It went a couple days with out goo so I started using a band aid but found out my error when I got goo all over my shirt so put a bandage back on. It only really goos enough so you can see the area of it, not past the diameter of the drain hole although a good part of that could be when I remove a bandage it seems to take the scab too but I was told to change bandages when I shower and I ran into a few older ones I had that were falling apart so I was changing it once a day for a few days.

My drain site never oozed, but it was the second to last incision to heal completely. The last was the largest one, where they pull your stomach through.

I, too, had itching..I would bring up the oozing to your surgeon, because I'm not sure if that is the norm, or not. I just know what mine did. Good luck, hun!

My drain site is where they removed my stomach. Suregon's nurse didn't say anything when I told her so I'm assuming all is good. Someone suggested I wash it with soap and Water every day but it's still an open wound! No thank you!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
