Question*~* Did anyone take diet pills prior to surgery?

Recommended Posts

Question*~*. Did anyone take an appetite suppressant (diet pill) prior to surgery? My eating has been out of control lately and I was thinking about purchasing something to help. I have about 2 months prior to surgery and would like to lose some weight prior to surgery. Thanks for your responses ahead of time.

Personally, I am still in the preapproval process. With that said, I had emergency gall bladder surgery about 3 years ago and was taking Phentermine. I almost didn't have the surgery as about 2 weeks prior I had stopped taking it as I knew something was wrong with me and my blood pressure kept going very very low right before sx. The anesthesiologist made it a point to tell me he doesn't like diet pills and that its very hard for him when monitoring for surgery.

My suggestion is to call your doc...

Thank you for your response. I have decided not to. I did a search and its not safe basically for the reasons you stated. thanks for your response.

Here is something I found online from a doctor:

Many diet pills contain additives which make your heart race (IE Ephedrine) or interact with anesthesia. Phentermine has been known to drop your blood pressure during surgery and many of my anesthesia colleagues prefer you were not on it.

I took Alli up until my day of surgery - it kept me from eating anything too greasy or fatty!

The old prescritptions were some times very effective but they took allot of the market as well as the 3 pill coctail including phentermine as a part.

The latest news is that they have aproved one which also has the phentermine in it but its the first in 10 years.

Over the counters have herbals now as well, they are not so good.

I use a natural resource algea called spirulina which has an over powering taste and I put it in blenderized drinks. It takes some getting used to if you hadn't drank anything like it before.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
