Why Calcium "Citrate"

Why not other forms of Calcium?

calcium citrate is more absorbable. The other stuff needs more stomach acid to break down and with it not staying on our stomachs long enough it won't do us much good .

The other issue from what I've been told is that while the other Calcium is taking longer to absorb it occupies space in your already small stomach making it difficult to get in the other required things you need.

I spoke to a pharmacist about it and he said that calcium citrate is easier on the stomach as well as more absorbable.Make sure you read your labels as I have seen a lot of people say they take citrical gummies and though regular citrical and citrical petite are Calcium citrate CITRICAL GUMMIES ARE NOT they are calcium triphosphate :) Calcium citrate chews are pretty hard to find in stores I order mine off Amazon. I just got Bariatric Advantage chocolate chews but I hear Calcet is good too. I have only been able to find calcium carbonate chews like viactive and its generic forms at Walmart, HEB,CVS,Costco,Target etc and that is why I asked the pharmacist why calcium citrate is better. After he told me and that they didnt have any chewable calcium citrate I just went ahead and ordered calcium citrate online. Hope this helps..

Agree with the why from above posts, but thought I also add the how. I've been getting my calcium citrate from a variety of sources. I'm supposed to have 1500 mg in divided doses (you can't absorb it all at once). So I take two citrical petite, 400 mg each (much easier to swallow), one Bariatric Advantage chewable, 250 mg, after lunch, and one Calcet Chewy bite, 500 mg after dinner. Having a couple of the chewables is like a treat, but the pills are more portable and efficient. There is a slow release citrical on the market, but sadly, it's not all Calcium citrate. That would have been so much easier!

Kalimom,

What is the brand of calcium citrate that you order from Amazon?

I get the Bariatric Advantage Chewy Bites. There are several different flavors to choose from.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
