I went to see my surgeon today because I have been having a lot of pain in my esophagus and it was cause by the band being too tight. My esophagus is all swollen now. My doctor took all the saline out of the band and has me on a liquid diet for 4 weeks. Has this happend to anyone else, where they needed to get unfilled and go on a liquid diet? I'm really nervous about being on a liquid diet with no restriction.

Thank you,

Jill

Hi Jill,

I was on liquids for all of August 06. I had a puch dilatation and esophagus dilation as well. The first 5 days were brutal, but I went and got an appetite suppressant from my PCP. Took exactly 5 pills and they made me real jittery so I stopped and made it through 3 weeks before I went on to mushies. I know it is really really hard, but if it means the difference between keeping your band and not having it, welll.....

All of us here will give you cyberhugs and support to get through this so hang in there with us!!!

Jill, I am sorry you are having complications! From what happened with my SIL, which was pretty much the same thing--band too tight--unfill. She said for the first 2-3 weeks it was not any issue with hunger, because she was apparently swollen, so still had restriction, simply from the band itself. The end of the 3rd week she began feeling hungry, so he moved her to heavy liquids, and to mushies week 4, then she had a small fill done the 6th week, and is doing well now. Hope you have as good of luck. We will all be here if you need support through it!!!

Good Luck!

Kat

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
