Protein Shakes - Are They A Forever Thing?

Recommended Posts

I was always under the impression that Protein shakes/drinks were for the post-op period where it was tough to get food/protein in. However, the more I read, the more it sounds like people use them long-term. How do you all use Protein shakes/drinks/supplements? Do you still drink/use them well after you're eating solids and "regular" food again? How do you use them? As a Meal Replacement? Supplement? Treat?

I haven't seen the nutritionist yet, so perhaps this will be addressed at that point. For now, I'm just kind of curious what to expect.

Thanks!

Crissy

Once you're on solid foods, if you can eat all your Protein you don't really need the shakes. Some NUTS don't like patients to continue using them at that point. They would rather see you eat nutritionally complete wholesome food, as long as you have the capacity.

Me, I see nothing wrong with supplementing your Protein intake with a shake, so long as you're not living on them.

They do make it easier to get in calories because they will not stay with you as long, so if you have the need to increase your calories they can be helpful.

I'm only 3 months out and finding it very difficult to "eat" enough Protein and keep my carbs down at the same time. I went to the Vitamin Shoppe this morning and bought a whole new sampling of Protein because I don't like the taste of any of the ones I have. The unjury is ok with milk and I have to dilute the Premier with milk too. I loved them both preop.

For me,the shakes are going to have to be a permanent way to get in enough protein.

I'm only on stage 2, but have you tried adding chocolate Protein Powder 1scoop-11 grams) to Sugar Free Chocolate pudding? Also, unflavored Unjury Protein to crystal lite raspberry lemonade-shaker cup with ice -a couple of times a day 11 grams each serving-should help!

I am just over 10 months and at my goal and still have an RTD Protein Drink daily. It fills me up the afternoon and also adds some calories besides Protein to my daily intake as I still have trouble getting in my allowable calories daily. I never used the powdered, always the RTD.

I really do like the Syntrax shakes, especially the Oreo flavor. My nut said that we did not have to consume them any longer after 3 weeks, but they are so enjoyable as a Breakfast when there is no time to make anything. The extended release version is the best because it gives you energy for 3-4 hours instead of the standard 1 hour or less. Unless my nut specifically says something, I am not going to give up my daily habit of 1 Protein Shake.< /p>

I just ordered a catalog from Synyrax- I see from web site they offer a nice variety of high Protein items and flavors. Thanks for the info.!

I've never used Protein Shakes, pre- or post-op. I've not had any Protein problems without them, though.

My program doesn't use Protein shakes, and no pre-op diet -- just a promise to keep food reasonable before surgery, no pigging out, no fasting. Post-op, no liquids or puree phases, we move to real food very quickly. So I have been getting my Protein from yogurt, cottage cheese, cheese, meats, etc., all along.

ETA: Can you eat Protein Bars instead? I do love Quest bars, which I special order from the states!

Thanks Swizzly - I will have to discuss the bars with my NUT next week.

I'd hate to make this whole surgery a bad experience for me over these Protein Drinks.< /p>

I wont stress it and just look into other options. :)

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
