Taking Capsules After Surgery

Recommended Posts

I am 6 months out and I have a wicked headache. I have been avoiding capsules but the only Tylenol we have in our house is in capsule form. The thought of opening it and mixing it with applesauce is making me wretch. Does anyone know if its cool take take capsule pills whole now, or do I have to open this gross thing up?

My surgeon recommends taking chewable/liquid/mixed medicines permanently, after surgery. I know there are many (on VST) who swallow pills/capsules immediately after surgery, and this is apparently ok with their surgeons. I prefer the conservative approach taken by my surgeon....because I know I will likely not have problems following that path.

My suggestion: reach out to your surgeon/program, and ask them the question. If they give you the go-ahead, go for it. If not, Walgreens makes a great "Junior" chewable acetaminophen that's cheaper than brand name Tylenol....I have a stockpile in my medicine cabinet!

I wish you speedy relief from your headache!

Thank you, I'd almost rather just deal with the headache than take this nasty powder. I will have to call the surgeon and pester him.

I am 8 days post-op and stopped the prescription pain meds, making me depressed, hyper and not helping with pain, and switched to Tylenol rapid release extra strength caplets. I even take one regular and one p.m. at night to help me sleep. No pill opening required. Just pur a usual sip of beverage in your mouth. Slip in the caplet, raise chin and swallow. Wait a minute or so to take second caplet. Tylenol is working wonders on my pain from haital hernia repair during my VSG. I take them during day and before bedtime. Good luck!

My antibiotic right after surgery actually was a capsule. At first I hesitated when taking it but thought, my surgeon said it is okay, so I took one with a small sip of Water and it went down no problem!! I was amazed. I don't think that it will hurt you at all.

My surgeon ok'd my Prilosec immediately after surgery (and it is a rather large pill). I was advised if needed to take Tylenol for mild pain they recommend the liqui-gels as they immediately break down once hitting the stomach acid.

Call your surgeon's office and get their approval just to be sure though....

My surgeon told me to crush or empty capsules into food until I am 6 weeks post op. Then its ok for me to swallow them whole. He just told me that on wed. He also told me next week ( at 2 weeks post op) i can take a small vit d pill whole. He just said to wait til 6 weeks on the other pills because they are larger. Hope this helps.

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?

Am I the only struggling to get weight down. I started with weight of 297 and now im 280 but seem to not lose more weight. My nutrtionist told me not to worry about the pounds because I might still be losing inches. However, I do not really see much of a difference is this happen to any of you, if so any tips?

Well recovering from gallbladder removal was a lot like recovering from the modified duodenal switch surgery, twice in 4 months yay 🥳😭. I'm having to battle cravings for everything i shouldn't have, on top of trying to figure out what happens after i eat something. Sigh, let me fast forward a couple of months when everyday isn't a constant battle and i can function like a normal person again! 😞
