Spicy Food But No Drinking With Meals?

Recommended Posts

Ok, I don't eat spicy food compared to others. Chipotle chicken, mild wings etc. is about all I can handle. However, I can't eat these foods without drinking the burn away.

How do you handle it? Usually I stare at the clock for 1/2 hour before drinking but with spicy food what do you do?

Sorry to say but my NUT said no spicy foods for that very reason....some of the veterans can probably answer that...

no drinking with food doesn't make sense to me... because what happens when you decide to eat Soup? it's got liquid... as well as "food" in it... so... what do you do? avoid soup forever?...

if you're sticking with the no spicy food and no drinking while eating... my response would be eat spicy food with soup or broth... so you can slurp the broth/soup/stew/whatever. or just train yourself to get tough and handle the heat.

there's also other things you can do to deal with heat.. eat more vegetables or a fruit.. like an orange..

that's another thing i don't understand.. how are you supposed to stick to no drinking anything while you eat.. when you eat a citrus fruit or melon?.. they're mostly water..

what does drinking while you eat something do to your stomach that they forbid you from drinking?.. cause just by eating certain foods (melons, citrus fruit, soup, stew, etc) you are breaking that rule. :/

I would say continued to stare at the clock for the 1/2 hour or temper the spice a little bit. I love spicy food, I eat spicy food and I wait the 1/2 hour.

I think the main reason for the "no drinking while eating rule" is manyfold.

1. Drinking during meals that are solid food will help "wash" some of the solids out of your stomach and into the intestine. This has a twofold effect. a) it moves the food out of your stomach and creates more space for new food to come in (bypassing some of the "restrictive" effect of the sleeve). b ) it dilutes the acids in the stomach that will help digest your food and reduce the work of the colon

2. As well, drinking during eating helps you swallow larger bites more easily and makes you less conscious of carefully chewing your food.

3. Drinking also washes tastes out of your mouth, reducing the sensory enjoyment of the food you've eaten and encouraging more food in your mouth to reintroduce the taste.

Now when it comes to spicy foods, sometimes you WANT to wash that taste out of your mouth, because it's too spicy! For myself, I am reducing the spicy foods to prevent stomach upset and reflux (I already take Omeprazole 20 mg 2x per day, that's enough, thanks!) and also to prevent the need for drinking during meals. If it's an "emergency", I do take a sip or two, but I never drink more than 1-2 oz per meal.

I love spicy foods and I do take tiny sips if I need to during a meal.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
