Feeling Free From The "prison" Of Hunger.

Recommended Posts

I'm only a week out from my surgery but I'm doing fantastically. I am mostly on fluids but do have a little applesauce or pudding especially when I have to crush pills. It helps getting them down.

One profound thing I've noticed is that even though I am hungry at times, I don't feel overwhelmed by the feeling. Before the surgery - for most of my life - it always seemed as though my appetite and hunger were a constant presence, something I was always thinking about. I would eat a big meal, and even though my hunger was satisfied, I would start thinking about what I was going to eat at the next meal. That obsession isn't there anymore.

I'm of the mind that this is what "normal" people feel. They get hungry, eat enough to be saited, then just get on with their day. I've already started researching Protein rich, lo fat recipes I can prepare when I can progress to a regular diet. Maybe it's just the euphoria of not being "starving" and having lost about 8 pound so far that is making me feel this way.

So, I ask all the folks out there who've been "sleeved" for a long period of time. Did it change your perspective of food and appetite?

I would love to hear from sleevers who find that dieting became easier after the surgery.

I think the best part of surgery is not feeling so hungry. I can chose to eat healthy foods because I don't have the same cravings nor desire to shovel food into my mouth.

Here is a great blog with recipes. I've tried a few, and I love it! http://bariatricfoodie.blogspot.com/

Smarty pants... I couldn't agree with you more! It's like someone has taken away my obsession with food.... I can shop without filling my trolley with everything that takes my fancy, I can read cookery magazines without having to immediately go and cook something. I keep thinking I am in a dream and will suddenly wake up from it. Like you, I can only think this is how normal people think. I am only recently sleeved (just over2 weeks) I really hope this is here to stay!!

It's so nice..... I now feel in control, rather than being controlled by food.

I'm only 1 week postop today, and the one thing that has freaked me out is how little im craving food. Ive been to the movies multiple times and had just a bottle of Water. That used to be hot dog, nachoes, candy, popcorn. At least 3 of those and a coke. I cooked for my kids, no issue. Just wondering if im wierd, or is this normal. Im down 18 lbs since surgery, total of 40 with my 2 weeks preop diet. Other than soreness im overjoyed with how things are going.

I am over 2 years out, surgery was in June of 2010. I still never feel hunger like I did prior to surgery, occasionally I'll have slight hunger, but it's not anything like before. I call it my new hunger, but it's something I can ignore. It's more of an empty feeling. I HAVE had a lightheaded, sick'ish feeling if I go too long and don't eat. More times than not, it's when I'm shopping and put off eating lunch for too long.

I am aware of every thing I put in my mouth, but this summer has been horrible. I am at my doctor's goal weight but 5 or 6 lbs above MINE!!! Family reunion, vacation, out of town company.....more sweets and more 'stuff' than I should indulge in. I do not deprive myself.....but it IS forced Portion Control, which I love. This summer I've just 'grazed' more than normal and have gotten way too full more often. I've started upping my Protein and liquids as of today. All the summer activities are basically over....I'm ready to lose these few lbs.

I DO look at food differently, and still pick and choose what I eat and how often. I know I still have eating issues, that will never change, the difference is I'm not hungry and that makes it much easier to have self control.

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
