I am not sure but I have Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas HealthSelect and they will NOT pay for it in no way. There should be a number on the card or a website you can go to about exclusions. Most likely they will not pay for it. I want to also find a way to pay for it as well.

HELLO. All you have to do is call your insurance company and ask if they cover it....they will tell you. I am still in the "research stages" of this also. Good luck!

my mother has a form of blue cross I can't remember exactly what it is but they said if i can prove that I have been over weight for more than five years and tried to lose the weigh (dieting and excercising i guess) they will cover it.

I found that Blue Cross and Blue Shield doesnt cover the Lapband. I live in Texas and can share my experience with you... Feel free to contact me anytime.... I was banded 8/26/02 and debanded on 1/6/6... It is a great surgery... but there are other options out there and that should be considered.

Take care and best wishes...:D

I am a BCBS of MI and they cover it 100%. I only have to pay $100 out of pocket for my hospitalization.

I think every plan is different, depending your employer and what they cover.

Good luck!

It does depend on what options your individual group plan covers. I also have BCBS and WLS was an exclusion. :D (So, I was self pay)

I had BC/PS PPO in Pennsylvania. My surgery was covered 100%. I was approved in 7 days. No problems what so ever.

cpbaby, what did you find out? I have the same coverage, I work for UT Arlington. Another co-worker mentioned in passing that she was banded in April and that they covered it but I haven't had a chance to talk to her in more detail. Let me know if you hear something and I'll let you know what I hear from her. I'm hoping to get this done asap, I know when I was on the HMO they didn't cover it but now I'm on the PPO.

Hello,

I have BCBS/UT Select through Univ. of Texas Med. Branch and they do cover it. I was banded 12-29-06. There is a 6 mo. diet requirement (you can use Jenny Craig, Weight Watchers, L A Weight Loss, etc.) and there are a few other requirements. Also, you must meet your deductibles and out of pocket maximums for the year. But I was approved in less than a week once I met the requirements. The Cust Care Rep was very helpful when I called the Ins. Co. PM me if you need more info.

Good Luck!!!

Myrna

Hello Myra,

Thanks for the feedback. Would you mind sharing your experience with me. I'm a litte nervous and I'm wondering if I really should do something so permanent.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
