Allowed Coconut Yes Or No?

Recommended Posts

I thought I had read on here about people avoiding or being told not to have coconut. Is that true that we shouldn't have coconut & if so why?

Assuming coconut Water isn't the same as my Dr gave me some to drink when I was 3 days post op.

It causes a bezoar in your stomach. You can drink the milk or Water, but we are supposed to avoid the coconut meat. Same thing with celery. That being said others eat it without an issue, but I don't. I will peel the strings off celery and eat it though.

A bezoar (/ˈbiːzɔər/, from Persian bazahr, "antidote") is a mass found trapped in the gastrointestinal system

(usually the stomach), [2] though it can occur in other

locations. [3][4] A pseudobezoar is an indigestible object

introduced intentionally into the digestive system. [5]

There are several varieties of bezoar, some of which have inorganic constituents and others organic.

Yes, I think it depends on how much and how often you are eating it. An Almond Joy Mini bar probably will do no harm, but a whole coconut (which is what the bezoar lady ate, if my memory serves me) may stop you up pretty well. People who chew the ends of their hair are also prone to develop bezoars, so don't eat that, either!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
