Beware of Blueberries- My band is fine though!

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone~

I just wanted to share what I have been through in the past few days.

Last Thursday while on vacation with my family I PB'd part of a crab cake and portabella mushroom. It was the first time I'd ever had a really rough PB so I stuck to liquids the next day. Well, I didn't feel very good and it felt like liquids were just barely getting down. Saturday morning I took my kids blueberry picking and only ate a couple of blueberries b/c I still didn't feel that great.

Well, things started to get worse and I just felt like garbage. I couldn't keep anything down except Water and at that point thought I must've damaged the band or was very very swollen.

I came here and read alot of stories about people having to drink warm tea, do liquids for a # of days etc and thought that was going to happen to me too.

Well, Monday night I started to spit up my own spit and gave my surgeon a call at home. He told me to either head to the ER or come see him at 8am the following morning. I decided to hold tight and saw him at 8AM yesterday. He brought me down for an Upper GI and the radiologist and him told me that there was an obstruction and showed me the pictures. My surgeon told me I needed a complete unfill and that should take care of it. I had an unfill and when they took my temp it was 102 and my blood pressure was quite high. So, after the fill I was admitted and started on fluids. I was also scheduled for a scope later that day to make sure that the band was really alright.

So, yesterday afternoon I was put out for the scope and when I came to I was told that a blueberry had lodged itself in my esophagus and was causing all of the problems. My band is just fine and now that I can drink again, so am I. I had to stay in the hospital overnight b/c of dehydration and the fever (which is gone now).

Basically, he thinks my PB irritated my esophagus and then that blueberry just got stuck at the wrong place at the wrong time. So, beware of blueberries my friends.

I am on full liquids for a week and then mushies for a week and can get my fill back in 4 weeks.

Did you really chew the blueberry? Or did it slide by?

I adore blueberries as a ,matter of fact there's a huge blueberry farm down the street from me and I go there all the time and munch blueberries sometimes till I'm blue in the teeth.

I've found since I've had some restriction that chewing is so important. I just hate to tell people not to eat certain foods that really are fine to eat, if you know what I mean.

I agree with Tootarts--was it blueberries, lack of chewing, or the esophagus?

I carry a box of raisins for a healthy emergency snack--a lot like blueberries. (fruit skin)

Thanks for sharing--a good reminder to us all to be CAREFUL--

I PB'd on mashed potatoes at our fav restaurant--usually not a lump in a boatload--not this Sunday. Rooky masher--Was hurting all day. What a waist of time--NEVER TAKE ANY food FOR GRANTED.

Anything fruit with a 'leathery' skin can do that. I cut up plums into small pieces and chew the crud out of them to avoid the skin getting caught.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
