Drain Removal- How Painful Really?

Recommended Posts

I hated when the drain was in, but getting it out wasn't bad at all. It went fast and didn't hurt, but it felt very weird. It was like I could suddenly feel every place it was as it was pulled out -- like a snake in my belly. It was a very strange sensation -- sort of like the roller coaster, but like a roller coaster with a kick.

It was over in less than 5 seconds, and I was also shocked about how long it was although I had been told to expect that too.

I was really anxious about this. In fact, it was easily my single biggest source of anxiety. I expected anything from sheer agony to some indescribable bizarre sensation. In complete honesty - I felt nothing. I was laying in the bed and made DH squeeze my hand. Nurse tells me she's going to pull it out, it will be over before I can count to 3. I say ok, start squeezing... and nothing, so I look up and it's out. It felt like maybe she barely touched me with a cotton ball.

I was so relieved!

Slight discomfort. Not enough to rate it as pain. It's a bit longer in length that I thought so..... It's just an odd, slightly uncomfortable sensation. Over very quickly! You'll be fine :-)

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
