Heartburn after a fill?

Recommended Posts

Hey all....haven't posted in a while, but I've been lurking around. The thing that has lead me out of lurkdom and into the light is this problem I have been having. Ever since my last fill, I have tons of heart burn: when I'm hungry, after I've eaten, at night (it even wakes me sometimes). Luckily it responds to Tums & other antacids but 9X out of 10 I don't have any!!! I think I am resisting buying them b/c I feel like they are a bandaid and I am kind of leary of them since I feel like I could mask a problem that could lead to esophogeal damage. I am worried that my heart burn is a result of the fill. I have been very restricted and have had a fair amount of PBing. Maybe the burn is things actually squeezing through my new, tiny stoma?????? Does anyone else have this issue? I never had heartburn preband except when pregnant. Do you think I could just take prilosec or something or are these meds contraindicated with the band??????? I know, I know, call the Dr.................

You are not masking a problem that could lead to esophogeal damage. You are TREATING a problem that, if left untreated, can lead to esophogeal damage.

One of the symptoms of a too tight band is reflux. Heartburn. Yes, Prilosec or another OTC acid reducer is a good thing to do...UNTIL you can get in for a small ufill. Tums is handy, too, just not long acting like Zantac, et al.

You need a small unfill, IMO. And yes, call your doc. :) Good luck and keep us posted!

Having as little as .2 of your .4 cc fill will make a huge difference in your heartburn but I bet will still give you enough restriction to lose wieght. Having your fair share of PB's is not good for your esophagus or your band, call the Dr. ALso if you are PBing and not doing liquids for 24 hours after a pb it just becomes a vicious cycle, you need to rest your esophagus and stoma after a PB.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
