Vitamin Regimen Without Iron?

Recommended Posts

So, my surgery is scheduled May 14th, and I am very excited. Needless to say, I have been all over this website and I have noticed that all of you are talking about Iron supplements. I just made an order for my post-op supplements recommended by my doctor, and I was not instructed to get iron. I was told to purchase a Multivitamin (has a little iron in it), calcium citrate with Vitamin D, and sublingual B-12. However, my surgeon combined his vertical sleeve and gastric bypass instructions in one packet with no differences. I seriously think he needs to update his paperwork, because they are different procedures with different dietary needs and restrictions. Thoughts??

I will say just to keep an eye on it when you have your blood work drawn. Be sure to ask the doc who's monitoring you on a long-term basis (for me, that's my primary care doc) about it and ask them to draw an Iron panel occasionally, especially if you're not menopausal.

If you're able to eat red meat occasionally, you probably won't have any problem with it at all, but some people do. It's certainly smart to be aware and proactive about it, but no need for worry.

Yeah, as long as you're being monitored, that sounds like a nice comprehensive mix of Vitamins. I know my surgeon says they check Vitamins at the three-month mark, and then again every year during the yearly exam.

I would assume any problems would show up if you are being tested appropriately.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
