Surgeon Saids, I Have 1 - 2 Lbs To Lose, But Really?

Recommended Posts

I went to my surgeon yesterday and she told me I needed to loose 1 to 2 lbs and that I looked really good. But when I look at the BMI chart and lbs. It doesn't correlate with my height. I'm 5'6" and for a big boned person, my weight should be 140ish. But I weigh 154 right now. So I hate to quit and just go on maintenance, So I am really starting to kick up the exercise and start doing some toning and keep doing what I've been doing Oh she also said to increase my Water intake and calorie intake. The calorie intake kinda scares me so I will keep a close eye on the weight loss. What do you guys think. Am I at goal, or do I strive for my goal weight of 140?

This is so difficult because we are all so different. Some of us are more muscular and some of us have bodies that are naturally more slender or "fine bones"... It's weird how some doctors really push to get us to a really low weight and others the opposite! My doctor wants me down to 125lb! Which is pretty low for me. I know I am about 5'4" but I'm built kinda of solid and I look really, really thin at that weight. I weighed that in highschool! So we'll see.

I'm sorry I am no help! LOL I tend to agree with several on this board that we have to follow our bodies and not get fixated on a number. That's my plan. At this point -- 88 lbs down --- I intend on taking it 5 lbs at a time and see what my body is doing. I look and feel good so if my body stops losing, I'm not going to push to go lower. If I keep losing a pound here or there (because it has slowed down), then I will go with that. I'm still eating right and exercising and jut maintaining a healthy life style. The trick will be IF, like some on this board, the loss continues past a certain point. But I am not going to worry about that unless I get there.

Best of luck Dori! I bet you are looking and feeling great!!!!! Congrats on all you have accomplished!

My surgeon wants me at 110 which would make me a size 0 or 2. No freaking way I want to be a stick. I looked malnourished when I was that light.

Go for where YOU feel comfortable.

First off, congrats!!!!!!!! No matter what that is amazing that your doctor considers you to be at goal!

You said you wanted to be 140, and you are currently at 154 right? A large portion of that could be extra skin, if you have it. I remember reading during my research phase pre-sleeve that many people who had tummy tucks or skin removal surgery would have 10+ pounds of skin removed.

I think ultimately if you are truly happy with where you are and the size that you are, and your doctor said that you are healthy... then awesome! You are at goal. Maybe you'll be one of those people who ends up below goal ;) There is a chance then when you up your Water and cals you might drop some more weight just from the change. I know some people boost their calories for a little while to break stalls, etc. The extra Water won't hurt either!

Congrats again and let us know what you decide :D

you have to go where you feel comfortable, i dont pay attention to the BMI chart anymore, it cant be the same for all of us right? With all of our body shapes and the only thing we have in common if height? If you feel healthy and think you could lose more, i say go for it! I went to my endo last week and she couldnt get over how much i had lost, i told her my goal was 140, she said no way you will look to gaunt 180 will be good for you. :D First doc who told me i will look better still obese haha. I told her lets get to 180 then decide what to do.

Hey Dorrie... I got it! LOL!

You know my fight to goal weight... and you know that I haven't lost a pound in nearly 6mths but gone into a size UK14 in the last few weeks... yep! Our bodies really are a mystery!

I honestly think that your finishing line will be where YOU want it to be... where YOU feel comfortable and where YOU look in the mirror and say 'Wow! Dorrie, you've made it!'

If that means you lose another 14lb, so be it. If that means you go into a semi maintance type state and up your exercise, so be it. You get what I am saying here... you will know whe you are done.

I agree with the other poster who said that weight is relative to the individual. I know that I am a lot 'heavier' than others who wear the same size as me... but I do have a lot of muscle mass and am getting fitter - back and leg permitting - lol!

Let me know what you decide... I'll be cheering you on whatever you do! =] x

Coops

A 1 o 2 lb loss will bring me to my surgeon's goal, but my goal was 130 lbs. But I realize that I am big bone and then some people who have had plastics report 10 lbs of excess skin, so I am realistically looking at 140 lbs. I know that it is so easy to revert back to old habits. In fact today, I went and had Mexican food and I ate chips & salsa, and a couple bites of my meal. My thinking was like, I down so I can eat this. Thank God for my sleeve, it did provide restriction. But my old thinking was there. This is so scary so I need to just stay focus an see what happens with my weight.

thanks

Dorrie,

Our program (Kaiser Fremont) did not set a specific weight for us. At my six month appt. I was about 150 and I told my Dr. I wanted to get to 135. She said there was no medical reason to do so. But I am happy at 135 and glad I stuck with that as my goal instead of just stopping at a normal BMI where I was at 6 months. That last 15 lbs. made a real difference in my weight under my chin, on my tummy and in my thighs. I really prefer the leaner look I have now.

Weight is very personal. Unless you are at a super low BMI, I don't see anything wrong with picking a lower goal weight. Of course, that's just my opinion! My happy, lower BMI goal weight opinion :-)

Lynda

Edited to add: I'm 5'6" and small-boned.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
