Question about protein....

Recommended Posts

I know I need to drink my Protein. My doc wants me to have between 50-60 grams every day (liquid form-anything in food is a bonus). I guess I am not super clear as to why I need to have so much. I understood that it was important for healing after surgery. Now I am four months out and still doing what I am supposed to do. But if I am able to get alot of Protein from food, why do I still need so much?

Inquiring minds want to know.:huggie: Thanks for your help.

60 grams should be the minimum amount of Protein you are getting right now and there are a couple of reasons why.

First of all, you will be losing weight at a rapid pace because of the reduction of calorie intake. Muscle, or Protein, is easier to burn for fuel than fat therefore your body will begin to burn your existing muscle mass unless you provide it with enough protein in the form of a suppliment. This is the same reason that body builders come straight home from a hard workout and down a Protein Shake.

Also, protein is important for healing of torn, or cut, muscles and tissue. It also helps fight infection. Both of these will be very important for a quick and easy recovery after surgery.

There are Proteins that are very low in quality and aren't absorbed well by the body. Be sure to use only whey Proteins and avoid Soy proteins. If you are interested in reading more about proteins, check out this thread:

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
