Anyone Have A Hernia Repaired? Still Hitting The Pain Meds After 9 Days

Recommended Posts

Couple of people mentioned they had a hernia repair during VSG surgery...what type of hernia was it, and are you a male or female. I think I have a small Inguinal hernia. I wanted to get the VSG surgery done first, but was worried they would not do it if I told them I thought I had a hernia. I plan on going to Tijuana for the VSG. Please advise on your individual cases of hernia repairs.

Thanks

Tony

I had a hiatal hernia repaired at the same time. I stopped the heavy pain meds around day 5 but still took liquid tylanol through week 3. I needed to be able to drive or I may have used it longer.

Well, the inguinal hernia isn't even in the same neighborhood, so I can't see why they'd refuse to do the VSG because of it. Now...if it's a hiatal hernia, like I had, it's right there where they are doing surgery, so most surgeons will automatically fix it while they are in there. I was worried about that disqualifying me too, until I talked to the nurse on the phone and she told me he'd fix it. Since inguinal hernias are also repaired laparoscopically, maybe you can get a two-for? I don't know. All you can do is ask, but I doubt it would prevent you from getting the sleeve.

Oh, and just as an update to my original post- The pain from the hernia stopped at exactly 2 weeks. I have one or two doses of the pain meds left. I'm saving it for when I twist my ankle hiking with my family this summer, because I'll be so much more active!! ;)

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
