Hello everyone,

My question is directed to those who have passed the 6 months mark since VSG.

How much more food can you eat when you're at 6 months? Please compare to capacity at two months post op.

Plus, after you have reached your target weight, do you eat fast food once in a while? if so, what can you eat and how much of it can you get in? Do you feel sick/bad after it?

Yes ..you can eat more..I'm at 6 months and the doctor says we should be eating 3/4 of a cup of food...and later in the 1 year mark 1 cup.

I have a question..after all this work why are you thinking of when you can eat fast food.?

As for the fast food-- I go Culvers once every other week or so. I go for a treat-- its my best friends and I favorite. We share a butter burger with cheese-- so I eat half without the top bun. and I have about 4-6 fries and a few pickles :-)

I will not say no to fast food forever- I just go a few times a month and I think thats reasonable.

I agree with you! Culvers is also my family's treat of choice, about 1-2x per month. I eat one chicken strip and about 4 fries; it satisfies my craving and I move on!

I am 5 months out, and I don't think I eat much more that I did at 2 months out. Maybe a little, but I still have really good restriction. I hope it lasts, at least until I hit goal!

I have to respond to your question "eat fast food". LOLOLOL I really thought you said "eat food fast" LOLOL- My WLS was 12/15/11

i was having my favorite morning treat the other morning, a scrambled egg for Breakfast. I really ate it sooo fast by accident, not fast, soooo fast, anyways - i felt so sick afterwards. So thats what i thought you were referring to, eating too fast. Oh well, i thought it was funny at the time, maybe you had to be there!!!

I agree w/Ladymac though, after doing all this with surgery, why would you think of eating fast food?

My truth is i NEVER ate fast food. I know i am weird, considering "my situation" -

I have seen people on this board saying they eat this or that without the bun, i just don't know when, i'm sure you'll get responses.

Compared to two months out, for sure I can eat more. Probably double, at least.

As far as the fast food, we don't know this fellow's situation, so ...

My son love's McDonalds (of course) and maybe once a month I'll do a drive through, get him something and pick myself up one cheeseburger. I can get through about 2/3rds of it and give him the rest. Why would I stop at fast food when I know the evils of it? Sometimes, things just work out that way. Driving somewhere and he tells me he is starving because he didn't eat lunch that day (for some reason). Why do I buy a cheeseburger for myself? Because I enjoy a cheeseburger, am eating low cal and I excercise a lot, so, I can do it on a rare occassion.

If you're looking to be on a diet of fast food, though, then there may be other issues which need to be looked at. You need to be able to be able to prepare food for yourself. If it is because you don't know how to cook, then before getting sleeved, you may want to take a class at a community college. If it is because you don't have time, then take a time management class.

Weight loss surgery and fast food are not good bed partners, for sure.

This is about the same as me, 5 months out & still eating about the same as month 2. I guess the main difference now is that i am use to eating the smaller portions so it doesn't seem so small anymore.

I can't even imagine eating fast food, not just because I know how bad it is for me but since being sleeved anything with a lot of grease is a complete turn off because its just tastes horrible anymore.

I agree with PDXman. I occasionally eat fast food for one or more reasons:

1. Everyone else is. In this case, I can usually find something pretty healthy. At McDonalds for breakfast I get the yogurt parfait. For lunch or dinner, I get a grilled chicken salad.

2. I'm craving something. I had a few sips of Eggnog Milkshake at Christmas time. That was enough to satisfy my craving for that treat. I gave the rest of the milkshake to another family member. I also ate the meat from a McRib sandwich for the same reason.

I got the sleeve so I could learn to eat like a normal person. Normal people have treats once in a while. But fast food was never a big trigger food for me. I know my triggers and I avoid them. I love mixed nuts, candy, and certain chips. Some foods that were trigger foods make me sick, so they are easy to avoid: creamy Desserts (I'm lactose intolerant now), greasy foods (I can eat a bite or two but that's it).

At six months, I could eat about 1/4 more per meal, and now, at 8.5 months, it's roughly double. For dense Protein, I've gone from 1.5 to 2 ozs tops to 3 oz. tops. For soft foods like yogurt and Soups, I've gone from 1/2 cup to 1 cup. And I now can fit in a little veg or fruit with meals. For example, at two months, I ate 1/2 cup of yogurt and 1/4 cup of fruit for breakfast. Now I can eat 1 cup of yogurt and 1 slice of whole wheat toast, well toasted. At six months, I ate 3/4 cup yogurt and 1/2 slice toast.

Personally I have found that there are two groups of people here. Not saying one is right or better, I've just noticed two trains of thought. The first is people who are desirous to mold their life around their sleeve. The others are desirious to mold the sleeve around their life.

The problem is that some from each group think that their position is the only "right" one.

I craved "fast food" when I was first able to have real food. I headed for In-n-Out and got a Protein burger (a burger without a bun). I had that and some fries. It was good. But it hasn't appealed to me since.

pizza on the other hand... I have about once a week. I also go out for mexican about once a week-I don't do the chips and slasa anymore. Nor do I eat the tortillas.

There is no where that says we can't have fast food during the losing part of our program. I think with thoughtful choices or small portions almost nothing should be "forbidden"

I have seen others post about how they chose this tool so that they would not have to be on a "diet" the rest of their lives. I have seen people who post that they still drink soda or alcohol. If that is how they choose to work their program than that is their choice.

I opersonally choose to have a dessert almost everynight. A piece of chocolate, a scoop of ice cream whatever. I try to keep it around 100 calories. I figure that that means I will lost about 1 pound less each month. I can live with that.

I figure I will be eating this way the rest of my life, so for me I chose to work my sleeve around my life. that being said-I have also decided that my purpose is not just to lose weight but to get healthier-So in addition to eating less, I am working on incorporating "clean" foods into my life. So that will seriously limit my fast foods in the future.

But considereing pre-op I ate out about twice a day, I think my twice a week now is a big change already.

So Rico-you have to decide about fast food-and if you choose wisely you don't HAVE to wait until you reach goal.

I can eat a lot more. I ate a grilled chicken sandwich on a regular bun with no toppings or sauces. Months ago I could only eat 1/2, but if I take 30 to 40 minutes I can eat the whole thing. I noticed that the restriction is way less on those slider foods so I have refocused on protien first. Protien first really works ... It also depends on how much I ate and how my sleeve is feeling, but hell yes I can eat a lot more!!!!

Sleeve of Steel: I didn't mean to imply that i am craving for fast food or that i am thinking to eat it. It's just that i'm doing a study and i wanted to know how people who were addicted to fast food are coping after VSG at later stages and/or after they have reached their target weight.

The thing is i totally agree with DebiC she is spot on. Sleevers deal with their food intake differently some eat too much and some don't. Some can have sodas with no problems and others feel sick and so on.

Its nice to read about other people's experiences and journeys and learn from them.

I'm curious to find out the results of your study. Would you share them with us when the time comes? I think that there are definitely addictive qualities to a lot of the fast food that is available to us. Most certainly the carbs! I recently heard someone refer to carbs as "carbage." Ha!
