I Definitely Regret Surgery.... So Far!

*****UPDATE****** feb 2nd, 2012

i now have a leak & a stent was placed in. feeling horrible!!! the below post is the least of my worries now!

im going crazy.. :(

i was sleeved dec 20th. everything was ok until maybe a week after coming home from the hospital. i realized that i was extremely exhausted and always felt faint. it didnt really start hitting me hard until last week. everyone keeps telling me that it will get better but it feels like its getting worse! i keep trying to "stay positive" but how much more of this can i take? i want to feel normal again!!!!

i noticed that when i walk, im like dragging my feet. im so weak and faint. almost like my thighs might just give out.

i also have excessive gas which i think is making me really nauseous. the burps are just crazy. i cant eat or sip without burping.. then it wont stop until i take some gas x chewables. i live off those chewables.

as far as shakes, i cant tolerate them. ive tried so many different ones & i throw them up. they absolutely repulse me!

i do eat but i have to be "in the mood" to eat whatever is in front of me or i will just throw it up. my stomach is extremely weak! i cant even tolerate Soups. they turn my stomach too.

i called my surgeon & told him how im feeling & he told me im dehydrated. told me to get on gatorade for a week & see how i feel then. im going in thursday morning to see the nurse practioner.

the gas & the gatorade mixed is making me very nauseous.

i take 20mg of prilosec in the morning, 2- Multivitamins & 1- B12.

im so so so so so so tired of this! i truly regret surgery. i never thought id feel like this but i do. :(

that regret will never subside because that experience will always be there. am i happy i had it? yes. am i happy im small? yes. am i grateful i lived? yes. would i do it again? absolutely not. do i regret doing it BECAUSE OF WHAT I EXPERIENCED? absolutely.

i may sound crazy or as if im contradicting myself but its the only way i can express myself.

Jas I think that the only people who really "Get" what you are saying are those who have walked a mile in your shoes. I am losing weight as well, but I deeply regret having had this surgery. What I put myself through and my family, nearly dying to lose the weight? I think it would be hard to not regret going down that road if you've experienced it first hand.

I forgot to add...its not a 1% complication rate on this surgery. That's the MORTALITY rate. Complication rates are 3 to 5% depending on the study you read, with those that are in the highest obesity categories thrown out of the study because their risks are so much higher.

nah I think I get it. Is it maybe that you don't regret the surgery' date=' but you regret the path it took after - which can be exclusive of each other. I'm very glad you lived and are healthy now :)[/quote']

I'm not sure I could ever separate the surgery from the path. The path would have never been taken had it not been for the surgery. They're part and parcel of the same issue (at least to me).

When my son was born he was very ill with a rare disorder this affects 1 in 30,000,000. We chased diagnoses and did everything we could to keep him alive while doing so. The four years we did that were hell, for him and us. People ask, well if you had to do it all over again would you? They are always surprised that I say "NO". While I love my son, and would never let him go for all the tea in china, we suffered immensely. I would never knowingly put a child through that hell or walk that road again myself. My husband feels the same. People don't understand that because they didn't live it. I get that they don't understand, much like this surgery regret I feel. You can never explain the agony and the pain.

Interesting last discussion. It's like me choosing to not have kids. Some people will admit to me they love their kids but they wouldn't do it again if they had a choice. Parents don't often feel free to tell each other this. And I understand for many reasons--- sometimes the pain is so great it wouldn't be worth it no matter what the outcome (or good stuff that happens).

perfect way of wording it.

i dont regret the surgery, i regret the path it took which was caused by surgery and out of my control. surgery almost killed me but it also has saved my life in more than one way. being that it almost killed me, i wouldnt risk it again but i do thank god that i made it through and that i look and feel how i do!

You have me feeling so much better right now, you sounded exactly like I do now. I was recently told that I have a stricture, it's excruciating to eat and I want to feel normal again. It's hit me so bad that I've sunk into a depression, I very rarely get out of bed and I'm in a funk because I don't feel normal. I'm glad you're doing better.

I am so glad this thread is here! I relate to it having had my own complicatiion. You said in one of your post that the surgery almost took you from your family, I have really felt some guilt over the fact I chose a surgery that almost took me from my daughter when she needs me most. I also have felt the conflict of being glad I am losing but yet saying if I could go back I would never choose that risk. Sometimes I am angry because my complication was surgeon error (cut bowel) and had that not happened I would not have suffered the pain and the finical nightmare of bills would not loom ahead of me. Yet it was the same surgeon who saved my life that almost ended my life. I do wish he would show a little more remorse but I guess he has to think of his liabilities.

He has made several jokes about my bowels I don't find the humor in. When he opened the incesions to drain them and found the small bowel out of place he ask if I wanted to see what it look like. Then on a follow up visit he ask if my bowels where staying in place. I told him I hoped so because that is something I had truly been concerned about. I really do not find the jokes in good taste at all

Now seeing how good you are doing a year out makes me hopeful. I weighed 277 on 11/30 was sleeved 12/5 and weigh 256 today. I am on to purée foods. I am still not getting a full 2 cups in a day yet but I make sure I get 60 grams Protein and as close to 64 Fluid as I can so not concerned with small volume.

Have a great Holiday thanks for helping me see what some time may do to the situation.
