My Lap-Band Surgery

Recommended Posts

Hello everybody, My name is Chris and I was lap-banded on the 24th of this month.

Here is my experience.

First off I had to be at the office at 5:45 A.M. to get ready because I was the first band of the day. I was also to have my hiatil hernia repaired(dunno if that is spelled right). I went in and pre-op and surgery went off without a hitch. I wake up in my recovery room at ~10:30 a.m. and they have me drink a little Optifast and take some hydrocodone. I pass out again for a couple hours and wake up to my mother (who works at that particular hospital). My nurse has me get up and go to the bathroom so I did. I walked around a little bit and went back to bed until they had me drink the barium to check on how well the liquids are going through the stoma. They had to give me the wax torpedo(supository) to suppress my nausea. Everything goes fine and I head back to my room to sleep until 4:00 P.M. in which I went home.

I get home and immediately go to sleep on my bed.

It's after this point when I'm starting to have problems. I can only sleep on my right side, it aches when I sleep on my back or on my left side. (my port is 4 inches above my bellybutton on the right) and I constantly feel bloated. I haven't been able to pass gas or BM(diaherha the first night, been taking stool softners since) and I have no idea what to do :tea:

Any advice?

Also, My gas pains are gone, it kinda sucked the first night but it worked its way through my shoulders. I also apologize for horrible spelling and grammar, as I whipped this up pretty fast.

Try either a heating pad or ice on your shoulder for the gas pain. I used heat after having my gallbladder out, but I've read some people on here have better luck with ice.

Good luck and hope you're back on your feet soon!

ah, my shoulders aren't the problem :tea: The C02 pains are pretty much gone, its just gastric gas pains that I think are going on now.

Hey Chris, I know what you mean with those gas pains. They are awful to say the least. I took GasX chewables for almost two weeks, I still do, but only occasionally. They will pass, but might take awhile. Good luck!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
