To Tell Or Not To Tell About Gastric Sleeve Surgery ?

Recommended Posts

I finally decided to have the sleeve surgery. Im just real unsure about telling people. I dont want to have to explain my decision process to anyone. Ive told my husband, kids, and a few close friends because I knew they will support me. How do you handle the negativity toward WLS?

I refuse to hear negativity towards WLS. Those who know me know that I am working my tushie off, literally! WLS gave me a jump start, but it's not keeping the car running, KWIM?

I've told all kinds of people about my WLS. Of course, I have a gajillion cousins and aunts, etc, who all know about the surgery and they'd tell it in a heartbeat. So, once my family knew, there was no way to keep quiet anyway.

I also am of the opinion that the general public's attitude about WLS won't change until those of us who have had it start being vocal about it AND showing that it really does work. Everyone knows "someone" who had WLS and gained all their weight back. I'm thinking it's time people saw some of us who have WLS and don't regain our weight. :)

Good luck with your journey!! :)

I have not been sleeved but decided long ago to only share it with my husband until after surgery. Maybe afterwards I will feel differently but I did not need to worry about what others thought. I needed to focus on the changes and embrace them. Until then.........

Hope this helps. Also, congrats on your decision, It gave me hope when I lost all of mine.

:)

I didn't really tell people, even my family. For me, it was a personal decision that I didn't want to talk about. I'm almost a year out now, and I still don't really talk about it much. I say you should do whatever feels right for you wth your family and friends

Thanks for the input. Ive decided to share with those I feel will support me. The others will find out eventually. But in my own time. Thanks again.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
