sever sharp pain under my drain tube site. 2 weeks post op.

Recommended Posts

I am so worried about this severe pain directly under my drain tube site. It only hurts when I walk. No pain when I am still or sitting/laying down. The pain is so sharp and is so intense that it almost brings me to tears. I have quit taking my Loritab and haven't had any for 4 days but started back on it tonight. I got up out of my chair about 30 mnutes after I took the Loritab, thinking that it would help with the pain but it didn't. So now I am on here trying to look up what could possibly be wrong with me. I looked up info on gallbladder symptoms and the only related symptom I have is the sharp pain under the right rib so i am hoping it isnt that. I am scared. I was self pay because of no insurance. I am self employed and can not miss any more work. I had called my doctor's office Monday morning after having a rough weekend. I was told to try ibuprofen and if I didn't get better, to call back on Wednesday. I will be calling at 8am in the morning.

Ibuprofen already? I know every place is different but most surgeons I have heard of expect patients to stay away from it for a few months at least. My surgeon won't let me take it at all.

Anyways, good idea going to see the doctor in the morning. I had pain for months at my largest incision, it was enough to put me in tears many times. Never had any pain at my drain incision though.

I broke down and called the on call nurse last night about 11:30pm. She turned around and called my surgeon. My surgeon called me back. When I told her about the ibuprofen, she told me to stop taking it. So I have. I started back on my Loritab last night. The first dose did nothing to help the pain. This morning, I took my second dose and.....RELEIF!!!! I am so happy! She did inform me last night, that it takes several doses sometimes to help. She was right! I am so happy and sooo releived!

If it's what I had it's a muscle thing that happens to some. I was only ok if I was lying down. I was told to double up my dose of pain medicine and REST. Also, wear the girdle thing. It took about 2.5 weeks to go away. The key is to REST. I'll say it again. REST. It will go away.

Thanks so much for the advice! I never thought about wearing a girdle but I bet that would help! I went in today and got some shots in my stomach area to numb the pain. I was told that the shots would last anywhere from 6 hours- 2 weeks. Unfortunately, they only lasted 2 hours! I did get my pain mdeicine refilled and that is taking the edge off of the pain. I was also told to use a warm heating pad but to cover it with a towel. :)

They didn't give you a girdle at the hospital?? Wow. This girdle I received is all stretch and adjustable. It's like wrapping yourself with a big ace bandage but more support. It really helped. The pain is coming from your belly weight pulling down on your muscles they cut to do your surgery. If you get some support of your belly, and hold it up and in, it lessens the pain and helps you heal. I'd call and ask the doc about one.

My drain site hurt more than anything else. And getting it removed sucked! But as soon as it was out I felt 100% better. awesome even. hope they take it out soon!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
