I know I should know the whys and why nots about not drinking 30 min before during and after eating but what is the real reason? I have such a hard time with this!! It's a tough habit to break!

I just read something today about the "why not" to drink during eating! I'll paraphrase because I can't get my hands on the article, but it went something like this:

If you eat during mealtime, you increase the chance of forcefully enlarging the opening between the stomach and the intestines, allowing food to pass quickly, thereby lowing the rate of satiation.

Boy, that was a better reason than "it might wash the food out of your little stomach."

My doc gave me 3 reasons... the first one was stated above. The second one was at first your stomach is so small you have to get the nutrition in and liquid takes up some of the room you need. The third one is it just plain does't feel good.

I drink up until I take my first bite of food. I do not drink with meals and I do wait at least 30 minutes after, but mostly 60 minutes.

I have taken a drink in the past, like to take a pill and it really doesn't feel very good. It is like there isn't room for both. I also drank milk one time shortly after eating. Man, I was hurtin' for about 10 minutes. So, there really is a reason for waiting.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
