I drank Gatorade Recover right after surgery. It doesn't have as much Protein as the shakes, but at least it's something. Really helped me to get some protein in. Now I like Unjury unflavored mixed with crystal light or sugar free koolaid and hawaiian punch. Also like drinking AMP chocolate from GNC. Good Luck..it's just going to be trial and error for you now.

I had surgery on Monday and I can't stand any of the Protein supplements! What can I do?

Yea, I have a closet of Protein tries.

How many have you tried?

I agree that unjury unflavored was the best. I could use it in things like milked down cream of wheat and not taste it too much. (As has been said here very wisely, unflavored does not mean no flavor.) As far as the made drinks, I really like the EAS Low Carb drink. I'm not fond of chocolate but was able to drink their version.

It really is hit or miss. There are tons out there. While you are on full liquid try not to fuss to much about calories or carbs (just my advice) and concentrate more on making these days as easy as you can. It was also the advice of the program I'm in.

Have you tried Syntrax nectar? It's a powder that's mixed with Water and it comes in fruit flavors like Twisted cherry, Fuzzy Navel, Lemonade... I would recommend going to www.mybariatricpantry.com and ordering their sample pack. It's like $13 and you get a sample packet of 12 different flavors!! I ordered them pre-op and then tried them after surgery and ordered the big containers of the ones i liked! I'm actually drinking the Cherry one right now and I'm 9wks post-op!

All the thick Protein drinks wouldn't go down so I had to have the thinner ones! To this day I cant really drink the thick ones.

Yes, eventually you will be able to get all of your Protein from food alone, but that wont be for a long time! You HAVE to get your Protein in somehow! Trust me, the nectar drinks dont have that bad flavor and it's not like drinking a Protein Drink.... it's more like drinking crystal light or flavored water!

Another option would be to buy the unjury protein mix and mix it in your Jello (make it from scratch and add the protein to the mix), add it to your Soups, etc... At this early stage, you dont really have much choice.

Totally agree - I HATE almost every Protein shake - mix, ready-made, etc.

unjury chicken Soup is a good alternative. You can't get it really hot or it will clump, but definitely tasted like chicken broth to me.

Do you have a Kroger or Fred Meyer near you? If so, as soon as you are cleared for yogurts, try out the CarbMaster Yogurts. 12g of Protein for a serving. I added Any whey (from Amazon) Protein Powder to it & thought it was good.

If you don't have any, even sips of chicken or beef broth have a little protein. What about milk? Can you drink that yet? The fat and protein will help with your energy levels.

Also - at less than a week out, don't stress yourself too much. Get in your liquids - hydration is the key in the first 2 weeks. Get in what protein you can, but stressing is only going to make it worse. (Take it from a "vetran" that knows!) These weeks will soon be a distant memory and you will be off living your new life. Good luck!

I just had surgery Monday! How long is a long time until I can get Protein from food? I can have drinkable yogurt right now! This is just very tough and I feel myself crying and just wanting to be normal (is that a normal thing to go thru)? I'm only 22 and I just feel like I'm never going to be normal again then I see my boyfriend eating food and I don't really feel hungry I just want something to eat and chew you know! Sorry for whining!

You will be able to drink and eat again! I promise...your tummy is really swollen and has to calm down!

Right now tho, you need to focus on staying hydrated and not on Protein. That is not important at this stage of the game! Your health is!! Sip your Water and broth and watever other liquids you can and don't worry about the Protein for a few weeks. You will be fine!!

Kelly :D

Everyone goes through this so don't feel like the odd man out :). Like Kelly said you are still swollen so focus on staying hydrated. I wasn't able to get all my liquid and Protein in until after week two. I hated the powders and cound not bring myself to drink them. I use the Atkins low carb/low sugar drinks they are 11 oz and 15 gr per. At Target they run about 5.50 for a pack of 4.

I too went through that phase of detesting the Protein shakes! You are not alone. I just made my 2week post op, and i moved onto mushy foods (egg/cheese/fish). That will happen before you know it, Until then, you can try the tubes that GNC sells called Smart Protein if you find yourself falling short of your 40-60g of protein via shakes.. I would have the Smart Protein tube (only about 3oz liquid but 45g protein!!).. Just keep the protein intake and you will soon get to the eating phase.. One step at a time :)

Congrats!

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
