If its not one thing its another......my BP issues are fine, and now I found out after my pretesting results came back that my blood sugar is SUPER HIGH. I went to my PCP last Tuesday and he put me on 500mg of Metomorphin? or something close to that name.... i take one pill a day. So I had a f/u today with him to check my sugar again... it came down by 70, but not enough. So ive now been instructed to take double up the dose to 1000mg once a day, and will f/u for another check with him on Tuesday morning. If it is not under 200, they said there is a chance they will delay my surgery next thursday :(

I am so upset .. this sucks If it came down by 70 on one dose, does that mean it should come down double with 2 doses??

I am freaking out!!!! Is there anything I can do as far as my diet to keep it down?? Im already on a low fat, no meat diet for my pre op. Im eating mainly veggies, and salad, with fat free salad dressing, wheat bread with fat free cream cheese. and some Soups by Healthy choice that the dr said were ok.

a low Protein diet is bad news for diabetes. (Which is what you have based on your blood sugar readings) If your blood sugar is still high on tuesday request a prescription for insulin. That will bring it down much much much faster than metformin. One shot at bedtime and your fasting glucose should be much lower.

FWIW I was dx'd with type 2 diabetes on Nov. 30th 2010 was on metformin with no real change. Started insulin on March 1st and within a few days my fasting glucose was normal. Surgery was April 22nd and I haven't had another dose of insulin or metformin since. My body completely reset itself

I am a Type 2 diabetic and have been for 10 years. I was also on Metformin. Before surgery I was taking 1000 mil twice a day. In addition I was (actually still am) taking Actos. They both lower blood glucose but work in different ways. My blood sugar levels were running about 140 - 170 before Breakfast even with medication prior to surgery. My doctor wanted me to go on insulin but I wanted to do WLS instead. The day I started my pre-op diet I stopped the metformin. On the strict pre-op diet my morning readings dropped to about 120.

Hopefully the Metformin will work and you will be able to have your surgery.

What kind of veggies are you eating? There are some starchy veggies that will skyrocket blood glucose readings. Potatoes and Corn both skyrocket my sugar, so I have to be careful eating those. Also try eating things that are low glycemic index values - that has always helped me when I discovered my glucose readings running high. http://www.glycemicindex.com/

I've been a type 2 diabetic for 6 years using 2000mg metformin a day - that's my only medication and it has been working well until the last year (perhaps my body has gotten used to it, or more likely my diet just really went downhill as I was eating a LOT of fast food).

I too, was a diabetic before my surgery and took 1000 mg of Metformin as well. One week after my surgery, no need for medication any more!

Losing weight will drastically lower your levels!

Try your best to stay away from WHITE foods as they will raise your glucose levels. Go for walks, as walking will lower your levels! Eat a well balanced diet and you will be fine. I agree with Apple, you need to have some Protein. But, limit it to 3 oz of lean protein per meal. I can't believe your Dr. would tell you not to eat protein! WOW!

I would really look at the fat free things you are eating. A lot of that is loaded with sugar. They put more sugar in fat free items to make them taste better after they take away the fat. I agree with everyone else, you need to be eating Protein. Have you met with a nutritionist?

Also, if you try to relax and not stress out your blood sugar should go down. Stress can make your blood sugar go up. Take a deep breath and try to relax as much as possible. Do what you can...if your surgery is postponed then there is a reason for it. Deep breaths....

When i make veggies.. I do them like a stirfry.. no oil just a spray that is fat free and like 0 calories, no sugar etc.. and the veggies i use are green Beans, red/green/yellow bell pepper, broccoli, and onions .. i also use garlic.

Other than that for breakfast im doing cream of wheat with splenda, or wheat toast with fat free cream cheese... dinner is usually salad.. with cucumbers, onion, broccoli, carrots, 2 table spoons of croutons (sometimes) and fat free dressing.

Am i doing anything wrong??

Its not no protein, just no meat. I replace it with 2 Protein shakes a day that are 25grams each .. each shake has .5 grams of sugar, 1 gram of fat, and 110 calories with 10 of those being fat calories. I will start walking twice a day .. I hope this helps

its a no meat diet.. but i am doing 2 protein shakes a day with 25 grams of protein each and its super low fat/sugar.

The only fat free thing i have that may be high in sugar is the salad dressing.. Ill have to look for a better one.

You're diet looks ok. I lowered my blood glucose significantly by doing no sugar, low carb and cutting portions. It went lower with my pre-op liquid diet. Then post op it was normal. I'm going on 3 wks post op and its stayed normal so far.

The metformin should help lower it. I hope you get to have surgery on schedule!

The other thing I would look at is your bread. Lots of breads have loads of sugar added as a preservative. I'm a baker at Cobs Bread ( only in Canada unfortunately) and we add no sugar or preseratives to most of our breads ( unless it's sweet stuff). My dad is type 2 my niece is type 1. It's the only bread we've found that does not spike them. I would call around to some bakeries in your area to see if any of them make something similar. Hope your doing okay

Cut your carbs and that will lower your sugar significantly. You are having your surgery next Thursday so why not start a full liquid diet I can tell you it WILL lower your sugars.

My full liquid pre op diet consisted of:

Breakfast: Atkins low carb/low sugar Protein shake ( I prefer the dark chocolate)

Lunch: Fage Greek yogurt blended with skim milk and a crystal light packet ( orange tastes like a creamsicle)

Dinner: Atkins low carb/low sugar Protein Shake

In between this if I wanted savory flavor I would do a beef broth and drank lots of different flavored diet drinks (No soda) to keep me constantly full and unfortunately lol constantly going to the ladies room.

This gave me around the 60 grams of protein they wanted me on and also prepared me for the liquid and full diet post op.

Does it work? You bet your buns it did. My sugars prior to the diet were 200- 250 in the morning and 300-400 in the evening and I was on 1000mg Metphormine 2x a day AND 10mg of Glipizide 2x a day. The morning of surgery my sugar was 77. I now take a 1/2 of a Glipizide pill with Breakfast and a 1/2 with dinner. My levels are now normal. I expect that as I lose more weight I will not even need the 1/2 and 1/2.
