How did you tell friends & family about having WLS?

Recommended Posts

I have no problem telling people about my surgery, it saved my life. I have seen no negative attitudes at all. I have gotten the occasional, "what is your secret to losing so much weigh?' I tell them. I thought people would be a lot more critical, I have been pleasantly surprised. Maybe it is my age, I don't know. I have stopped worrying about what people think about me a long time ago.

OMG I told EVERYONE I was having surgery. I told my family, I told my friends. I've told casual aquaintences at work. The only person who doesn't know is my father and it's because he's been out of the country and won't be back for a few weeks.

Most of the response has been positive and supported or at MOST guarded. My mother is worried, of course, but she trusts that I'm going to research the heck out of this and make the right decision for me.

But the proof will be in the pudding. I haven't had the surgery yet. We'll see how supportive everyone is when the weight actually starts coming off. That will separate the friends and loved ones from everyone else.

Hell if they give me a video of my surgery I'll probably show it to everyone at work. "OMG Look! that's my liver!"

I'm weird like that. And I can't keep a secret about something exciting to save my life.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
