Have you had dental problems after surgery?

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I've been poking around trying to find out whether I can expect my teeth to deteriorate after surgery and I've seen some scary threads on other boards, but not much discussion here. I really am not ready for dentures and my teeth are touchy. I already have several root canals, an implant and one bridge.

Have you had dental problems you think are related to VSG? I've read the dry mouth, acid, Vitamin and mineral supplements, and poor uptake of Calcium and Vitamin D can play havoc with your teeth. I'm currently taking Kaiser Fremont's recommended regimen of Vitamins. which includes a large amount of Calcium, taken 3 times per day so it absorbs into the system better.

Thanks for your input,

Lynda

I was just at my dentist last month. I have had not side effects from surgery with the exception of meat getting stuck in between my teeth where I have a large filling that needs a crown but it needed that prior to surgery. I actually floss more often because of this so it actually is better for me.I do faithfully take my Vitamins and Calcium. And since I do not eat as many sweets that may prevent future decay. Hope this helps.

I have always had trouble with dissolving enamel but it does seem worse since surgery. I don't seem to have a dried mouth and except for a blip in Feb (I was out of town almost 2 weeks and did not take care with my supplements and Protein got run down and got sick) my labs have been all good. I was just about to post a question if other past diet soda addicts have this problem.

I have been wondering this too, for the most part my teeth are and always have been good. I'm just 3 weeks post-surgery but my teeth feel dirty ALL THE TIME! i am brushing 3-4 times a day??? Is this to be expected?

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
