Hormonal mood swing normal after surgery??

Recommended Posts

I am a little past 5 months post op and have been extremely hormonal! I am moody, whiny, depressed, anxious and so much more then words can explain! I have been getting hot flashes lately but yet I am always cold! I figure some of it is because I just began my Vitamin regiment instead of right after surgery! also I haven't had my monthly friend since the day after surgery the 28th of Oct. and they said that is normal cause I am malnourished ( I am working on that) of course my primary didn't believe I wasn't prego till I did the blood work and my surgeon said it is common for this surgery to throw off your cycle for 6 months to a year. my question is is it normal 2 be extremely hormonal during this weight loss time? I feel like I am a spaz at times any input will help! Thanks..

Rapid weight loss releases excess estrogen stored up in fat, which can do anything from bringing your periods out of whack to all the other wonderful things hormones do to women. (Yay girl power!)

It doesn't last forever. Like so many things it's just something to be weathered.

Now you didn't mention your age, hot flashes sound more like "the change" but it could also be caused by the weight loss.

Good luck and enjoy the ride.

I am 31years old and I hope I am not starting the change! My obgyn doesn't think so she said it could be the viamin deficiency and now that I am eating better and starting my vitamins.. I hope this mood swing stuff ends soon, maybe since I hit a Plataeu that will help...thank you for your words...

Well, I am only one month out of surgery, but i have found that I will have a hot flash if I haven't eaten enough that day. One second I'm fine, then next I feel sweaty and like I need to sit down. Eating something seems to cure it. I've also recently upped my daily calorie intake because I was only getting about 400 calories a day. Since I'm eating more, I feel much better and haven't had the hot flashes.

Same type of thing but in the male too. I was diagnosed with low testosterone a while back and started injections, had VSG surgery and lost 80+ pounds, my testosterone level shot up 8X as much! I was like the incredible Hulk - everything! Doc said it's simple, less of me to dilute the hormone therefore a higher level. Arrrrggghhh! ME SMASH!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
