I stopped my pain meds in the hospital prior to discharged, the bloating and gas stay with me 3 days upon returning home. Oh I was in the hospital for 3 days, but everyone heals at their own pace. Take Care and I hope this helps.

I asked this same thing about a week ago.I was sleeved on Dec 7, so I am 9 days out. For me, I would say the gas lasted about 4-5 days. Day 3 was when the left shoulder pain began. They say that walking helps as well as fluids.

As for the bloating....I am bloated whenever I drink one of my Protein shakes. I think the bloating might last about 4 wks. I had my post op today and that is what they told me. Also, it's not just bloating and gas. You are also swollen from surgery. When I went back to work yesterday, I could button my pants, but I had lost almost 10 lbs. It's due to the swelling. My dr said it could take 4-6 wks for the swelling to go down from the surgery.

I was on my pain meds for 6 days. Day 6 was just to help me sleep. As far as pain on day 9, I am sore...maybe uncomfortable depending on which way I move. It gets better every day.

Everyone is different. I hope this helps. Hang in there.

I felt the gas pains mostly in my upper back. That lasted from day 2 through about a weeks time. It really didn't last too long. I didn't really feel "bloated" from what I can remember for more than a few days.

Walking as much as you can helps with most of that, so anytime you can - get up and move about. It will help a lot.

I didn't really take any type of heavy medication. It was more like a sublingual ibuprofen. That seemed to help a good deal. Then, when I got home I took Rapid Blast Tylenol and that seemed to do the trick. I did pretty much need the pain medications up to about week 2 constantly, because I can be a big baby when I'm in pain or sore... LOL

I was afraid to answer till I read momto2boys answer :)

I felt crappy till the evening before my 2 week date. All of a sudden I felt pretty decent and I didn't take any of the pain meds the Doc sent home with me - I had been taking them every night before bed. I actually slept well that night too.

Everyone is different.

I didn't really have any significant pain past the first day. In fact, they were getting ready to give me morphine and I stopped them. My biggest problem was the God awful nausea! It was the worst I had ever experienced in my life but I know it was because I had had chronic nausea for 7 years prior to my surgery. I never really had too much of the gassy feeling. The good news is that after about 2-3 weeks the nausea went away and it has never come back!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
