How long does does the gas pains last after surgery

Recommended Posts

Hello,

You should see some relief in about a week. Your body is tring to absorb the CO2 and it takes a little time. I found that doing deep breathing exercises helped by making sure that when I exhaled, I used upper abdominal muscles to press in and gently force the gas back down in to the main body cavity. When I laid down at night, I had pain shoot up in to my left shoulder and left side of my neck, but by rolling on to my left side, that relieved the pain - not sure why.

I found that when sitting up, if I pulled back my shoulders and sat up straight, that also relieved some of the internal pressure. Hang in there. It will pass pretty soon.

Best wishes,

Lydia

I double what Lydia said -- deep breathing exercises really helped me -- it took about 2 weeks for the pain to subside. Feel better soon!

I am 6 days post op & it's still horrible! I have trapped gas & it's hurting even when I try to swallow! :(

My incisions are not bothering me at all, it's just this gas! I don't know how much more of this I can stand! I've tried walking, drinking hot liquids, using a heating pad, Gas X strips, Maalox and stretching...so far nothing has worked! Has anyone else had the problem of feeling like they can't swallow due to gas? I keep praying & hoping that the next day is better!

Hang in there...we'll make it! :)

Rhonda

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
