VSG after Banding

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm new here. I currently weigh in at 330lbs! :-( I had a lap band placed in January of 2006 and for the first year I did great. In 2007, I had some family and emotional issues that knocked me off balance which led to a slow in weight loss and I was struggling with the band to find that "sweet spot" where I would have good restriction but would still be able to eat my Proteins without the food getting stuck.

I think the band and I failed each other because I got so paranoid that I was going to keep throwing up after eating that I had the band unfilled eventually. Now, four years later I've learned new skills to cope and learned what works and what doesn't.

I am wondering if it is possible to have success in weight loss converting from the Lap-Band to the VSG. I am 34 yrs old and have been contemplating the RNY for the last four years and I always get scared off about the possibilities of mal-nutrition and Vitamin deficiencies. I just started reading more about VSG and found that it is covered through my insurance and it feels more comfortable to me knowing there is no bypass involved which could lead to mal-absorption issues.

So....to all of you who have been around this block, is it possible to convert a Lap-Banding to a VSG?

Thanks a bunch!! : ~ )

You need to read the band to sleeve revision forum. Your story is like all of ours. Living with the sleeve is pretty effortless. The band was a nightmare.

There are many people who have horrible band problems that do great with the sleeve. I sure wish I had gotten the sleeve first!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
