Hi, gang! I was wondering if you get gas alot post- surgery. I have been told that it can be very odiferous (stinky) after regular gastric bypass and I was hoping it wouldn't be true for the VSG. ;)

Hi Deedle Dee, I had the sleeve done on 10/21 and I had some gas but it does not stink. I can tell that the surgery gas is starting to work it's way out. Much relief... Good luck

I get gas if I eat a bunch of white carbs, and yep, tooting is stinky business but it isn't different than it was pre-op. Gas is gas, broccoli is definitely a culprit for me, but really that happened pre-op as well. Gas X strips are a good remedy. Immediately, post-op, you'll have a different type of gas from them blowing up your abdomen with CO2 gas. Early out, I learned very quickly to "never trust a fart" because of the liquids in, liquids out rule. Gross, but it's true ! ! !

Maybe I'm an odd one, but I didn't have hardly ANY gas after surgery. Even the nurses were like "any toots?" lol, nope. But I will say that I was the burping queen. For 10 solid days every single sip of Water = 2 burps. I gave up "excusing" myself after every burp around my family. Finally, it subsided. But when I eat the first few things that happen are a couple of burps. It keeps getting better, so heres hoping.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
