Please Help....AWFUL Taste In Mouth

Recommended Posts

So I had my VSG on July 8th. At first things were going fairly well, except that I would violently heave whenever I tried any form of Protein supplement. So I was getting down all my protein normally, etc. although my caloric intake was at about 300 a day and my protein intakeat about 10 grams. WAY too low I know.

Then 3 weeks ago everything changed. Badly.

My cotton mouth intensified to the point that I was barely able to stand it, and I developed the msot grotesque taste in my mouth that I couldn't nullify with anything. Then I started dryheaving forcefully about 8 times a day, sometimes even before I had eaten anything. I went to my doctor and he said he was confused as to what was wrong with me. He suggested that maybe I'm in severe ketosis and instructed me to add some complex carbs to my diet. So I have. In the last 3 or 4 days the taste has changed. Now it's a sour taste that is equally unbearable. It makes literally EVERYTHING I DRINK, even Water, taste sour, chalky and bitter.

I need relief from this NOW. This journey is tough enough without having to deal with this taste. It is literally driving me insane. Please help!

It is probably ketosis, your body goes into starvation mode(only 300 cal??!!) and your body (and brain) starts using fat for fuel instead of glucose for its energy source, which leads to an excess of ketone bodies (hence ketosis). I would recommend consuming more calories (at this stage probs about 900 cal/day) The other thing would be adding carbs to you diet (oats, some Peanut Butter, slow releasing carbs) as your doctor said, and keeping yourself hydrated (you get mor dehydrated while your in ketosis) In the past doing the Atkins diet I found useful chewing on parsley (which i learned to loved) or even drinking Water with parsley in it, it neutralises that bad taste. Hope this helps :D

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
