Gastric Plication done this morning

Recommended Posts

I had plication surgery with Dr. Corvala in Tijuana on July 15th. I'm down 28lbs, and feel pretty darn good. I am able to eat anything I want, just pretty small portions 1/2-3/4 cup. Tonight I had 2/3 of a cheeseburger (no bread) and maybe 4 fries for dinner... My hunger is pretty much suppressed. I don't feel hunger the way I used to before surgery. I eat and I get full and feel full for a while. There are days when I have to remind myself to eat or my husband reminds me. I have been hitting the gym pretty hard since week 3, week 5 I started back up with weights, today I did 45 minutes of spin class and then this afternoon had 60 minutes personal training session (P90X type stuff). I am glad I had this procedure because if I had to for whatever reason it can be reversed. I have however gone in to this thinking I won't ever reverse it and it is a life long change. I eat with my husband and have a normal life, just eat like a thin person now. I was a volume eater of healthy foods, so my diet was pretty healthy just a ton of it.

So glad to hear this, I am leaning toward the plication for the same reasons as well but was not sure it could get all the weight off??

Didn't want to go through surgery and spend $$ and not have the success 'm looking for. I'm a healthy food volume eater as well. Thanks for your comments, keep posting your progress!!!!:thumbup1:

Looks like we are at the same stage of this journey. I'm also looking for any and all feedback. WLS is scary and you certainly don't want to make wrong choices. Everyone that I'd seen on this site all used Dr. Corvola or Dr. Rodriguez in TJ. I'm also considering Dr. Ortiz and Dr. Martinez at the OCC (Obesity Control Center) in TJ. Not sure who just yet?? But I will be having a phone conference with Dr. Martinez this Monday.

Keep asking questions and good luck:thumbup:

From what I understand, plication doesn't have the ghrelin-reduction benefits of VSG. In short, it is stomach stapling (rebranded).

It's probably marginally safer than VSG (although VSG is proving to be very, very safe), but I would wager that the long-term weight loss (3-5 plus years) won't be nearly as good without the suppression of the hunger hormone.

Good info, thanks for your input and congrats on your weight loss! :confused1: What has it been like? What do you eat? have you had complications? Etc..??

Doing well.....I am about 7 weeks post op and really not having any issues. Like other weight surgeries this is just a tool. You still need to watch your food intake and exercise. Weight wise I believe I am a little past 30lbs. I have been able to start exercising faithfully the past two weeks so I am hoping this will help. Only problems I had was the nauseous feeling but I was able to overcome that with the help of meds from my doctor and time. I believe more than anything it was my stomach just being mad at me and trying to heal. My personal opinion is the plication over the sleeve for the fact that it is reversible where the sleeve is not. Hope I have helped. Dr. Watkins was my doctor and he has written some great information on this website regarding plication. If you have any other questions don't hesitate to ask and I will be brutally honest with you. The only draw back that I have is the fact that my doc fixed my stomach but I have to fix my head. There is no doubt there is an emotion that comes with food and working on that is the hard part.

Hi there,

its good to hear that you are doing well and 30lbs is awsome!!

Can you tell me how much you can eat at one sitting? Do you know what size bougie your doctor used?

Lisa~

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
