Hey quick question. I cant remember what post I read it in but do people post surgery have trouble wiping? What is that from and how long does that last? How long till you can take a shower? And has anyone gotten one of those wiping gagets. I am 33 and pretty limber, should I be worried?

I don't know what a wiping gadget is, but you can take a shower the day after surgery if you want.

I haven't had any issues with wiping, but I have a very large friend that has chronic sores and partially healing scabs on her hand because she has difficulty wiping without her hand being scraped on the toilet seat. She hasn't had surgery, but I can see that someone like her that was already having trouble might have a more difficult time after surgery because of the restriction on twisting.

Ok cool. YAY! The wiping instrument is this long extended handle that holds tp like a claw and wipes like a hand. My mom saw it and wanted to by it for me and I was like holy cow woman what are you trying to do to me. LOL. So glad that I will not need it or need help from my bf or dad whom will be my primary care givers immediately post surgery. THANKS ALL.... XOOXO

I didn't really have a problem, but it was a little difficult to twist for the first couple days. I bought a small pack of flushable wipes which was helpful.

I didn't poop right away. What with fasting the day before surgery and then no Water (or food) the day of surgery until the following day. After that you'll be lucky if you can get down 1/2 of the liquids they bring you. Not much to, umm, poop out. :biggrin0:

I can't imagine wiping the day of/after surgery. My stomach was so bloated from the gas they pump you with and so sore. I didn't even attempt to the first time I had to go and instead used the removable shower head to help with cleaning the area. They had administered a blue dye the day prior for a leak test and then the day after gave me solution for a 2nd leak test. That did it for me and gave me blue diarrhea. LOL

I didn't go again (had no need to) until I got home and by then I was able to go back to wiping normally. I just make sure to be careful since my incisions are still closing (inside and out)

I couldn't do it. Had to have my fiance (poor guy) or my mom (nurses are tough!) help me for 4-5 days. It was embarassing. I couldn't even turn around or twist to come close, and I had 0 issues before surgery doing this myself... guess i was the unlucky one

I don't think I pooped for 7-9 days. LOL. So yeah, by then I was down 25 lbs and feeling pretty good. No issues with wiping.

I'm about 4 days post op and can't wipe myself after I pee. My mom is a nurse and me and my boyfriend have been together 3 years and its not too embarrassing. Also had to have the nurses in the hospital wipe me as well. Obviously haven't pooped yet but hopefully will be able to wipe myself by then. I think I cant do it because i have short arms lol and trying to gives me sharp pain in my abdomen. So as much as I'd rather do it myself i really cant yet.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
