Getting enough protein vs protein powder once on regular foods

Recommended Posts

I will be moving from mushie to full foods later this week. My question

is once you have moved to the full stage are most people able to eat

enough Protein to greatly reduce the amount of protein powders used

during the first month after surgery?

I know I will proably need to use some powders but I've been burning

through Unjury this first month and was hoping to switch more to

food, Protein Bars and a few shakes to reach daily levels.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Love the sleeve!

I was able to get my 60gr of Protein from food pretty easily once I moved to soft solids and regular food.

3 ounces of lean meat contains 21gr of Protein so I really ate a lot of tuna and chicken salad through the soft solid stage. I stuck with 3 ounces of dense protein for a long time. I never found a protein supplement that I could tolerate until my 4 month post-op mark, so I never used them. My surgeon's recommended diet was 4 meals a day consisting of at least 15gr of protein. I found that doable most days.

I agree with Tiff here. There are ALOT of good sources of Protein that taste a ton better than Protein shakes! The problem is that some people don't like to cook so it's easier to swallow a Protein shake.

Try any of the following for great proteins:

fish

eggs

cottage cheese

greek yogurt

chicken

pork

beef

bison

turkey

venison

lamb or goat if you're into that

cheese (watch the fat)

shellfish like shrimp, crab, lobster, clams, oysters, mussels

The varieties are endless. Promise yourself that you won't eat boring food!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
