tasting shakes pre-op

Recommended Posts

i ordered a bunch of Protein samples and i tried a few yesterday.....

interesting that i only liked chocolate vanilla and mocha/cappuccino from optimum nutrition......and i am not difficult when it comes to taste....

I'm pre-op,but will i still like them post-op??

or will everything change after surgery and i will like others i hated yesterday? :crying:

The big thing I noticed with me after surgery (and I've heard others say this too) is that everything tastes sweeter. I notice the sweetness in food & shakes much more than before. I almost got sick on a shake the day after (one of my samples) because it was too darn sweet. People have also said if you didn't like it before you probably won't like it after. But I just stick to my one Protein Shake flavor. Glad you found something you like! :crying:

Should I be sampling Protein powders now, pre-op? I'm really interested in UN-flavored....are they really un-flavored? I've been experimenting with smoothies. I.E. Greek yogurt (high in protein) with a banana, pineapple or SF Hershey's Syrup, maybe some coconut or vanilla extract. I've come up with some pretty good ones. Will adding the powder change them, that is my question! Advice is welcome!!! (any brands recommended? what's best and what is considered low in sugar; low in carbs?) Thank you in advance!

My tastes changed pretty significantly post-op. I, too, hated sweet stuff. I couldn't really handle anything sweetened with aspartame, Splenda in small amounts was okay. Everyone is so different, but I know a lot of us found that stuff we loved pre-op, we couldn't tolerate for awhile post-op.

NtvTxn - as for the unflavored, that just means there is no additionally flavor added to the mix. It doesn't mean it's tasteless. I found the unflavored (unjury, and one other brand) to smell and taste more "proteiny" and that is one thing I really could not deal with.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
