Help with crushed pills

Recommended Posts

My doctor adviced me to start crushing my pills now so that I can get a little used to it before surgery. I tried it today and it was gross!! I put it in a teaspoon of Water and choked it down, it was so gritty and there was alot left in my mouth so I had to down a glass of water afterwards just to get the taste out of my mouth. I know I won't be able to do this after surgery so if anyone has any suggestions on an easier way I would love to hear it. I have chewable multi-vitamins, but there are a few that I still can't find in chewables like Vitamin D and Biotin so if anyone kows where to purchase these in chewables it would help out alot!!

Biotin comes in a capsule usually so you can open it up and dissolve it in applesauce/juice.

My surgeon approved pills/caplets the size of an regular M&M immediately after surgery.

I can not handle crushed up pills in Water, or anything laced with meds. I was on hoards of meds when I was a child, and my mother hid them, crushed up in Peanut Butter, jelly, applesauce, and other mushy stuff.

I would caution you post-op trying to get in extra supplements as you should not be restricted for too long. I noticed that my gag reflex became much more sensitive post-op. Even brushing my teeth would cause me to gag sometimes, so if it's gritty and icky now, you may not be able to tolerate crushed up pills the first few days.

For me the first 14-21 days post-op, on the Clear liquids, I burped after every sip, and can't imagine burping up pill tasting stuff.

Here's a link for Biotin lozenges

They have a huge assortment of Vitamins and supplements. I order the liquid Calcium citrate with has magnesium and Vitamin D in it.

There are liquid Vit D drops. I don't have any reference on it, but maybe you can google it.

After one nauseating try, I did not focus at all on solid Vitamins the first month...just made sure to open up the nexium and take the granules without chewing, in some liquid. I took liquid Vit D from my Dr's office, and sublingual B12.

Now at almost 3 months I can take most pills. The big Calcium pills I break up into smaller chunks and take with liquids.< /span>

My doc has me mixing about a tablespoon of applesauce with the crushed pill powder. Not a lot better but a little. It's about to ruin my love of applesauce, though.

Mixing them with applesauce or pudding sounds great. I'm curious if you still get the full potency effect of the Vitamins or medications when crushed or added to food? What about crushing them all together and throwing them in...can I do that?

Consult a pharmacist before mixing all meds and supplements together. Some things need to be taken separately. A pharmacist would be your best option to get a true professional/medical opinion on mixing all of them together.

Hello ,I used the 1oz plastic cups I obtained from the hospital before I went home. In the hospital the nurses would crush any given medicine pill and mix it up good in a little apple juice in a 1oz cup along with that they gave me another larger cup with some apple juice to help wash it down. I used the same technique at home. It still was a bit difficult but it worked.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
